NOVA-12 to put on 7th annual breast cancer walk this Saturday

Dozens of walkers will trek from Fort Mason to the Bayview on Saturday for the seventh year in a row to raise money for the breast cancer organization NOVA-12. The 12-mile walk represents the 12 percent of women in the United States diagnosed with breast cancer. The trail changes every two years, usually starting at the north side of the city and ending at the Bayview Opera House. The route is purposefully designed to address the racial health inequity in the treatment of breast cancer. “People in the Mission, Chinatown, and Bayview get diagnosed at a later stage,” said Monica Bien, a physician’s assistant at San Francisco General Hospital. “So we’re trying to show how the freeways and redlining affected community health and wellness.”The […]

Fire at Mission Buddhist temple displaced four, including cats

The fire at a Mission Buddhist temple residence near 22nd and Capp streets on Tuesday left four residents displaced, of 15 residents living in the adjacent building, according to the San Francisco Fire Department.  The fire hit the residential Victorian adjoining the temple. No residents were injured, and one firefighter suffered minor injuries. Both cats living in the building were rescued, according to the nuns. The cats were not eating since the fire, one nun said. The firefighters rescued one cat, and the other hid under a bed on the third floor. The Victorian-style residential building, adjacent to the Buddhist temple Hua Zang Si, which opened in 2004, suffered “extensive damage,” according to the fire department. DNA links a suspected Chicago-area serial killer who died in 1981 to a woman’s 1979 death

NORTH AURORA, Ill. (AP) — DNA found on the clothing of a suburban Chicago woman who was kidnapped and killed 45 years ago matches that of a suspected serial killer who died two years later, authorities said Wednesday.The DNA of Bruce Lindahl, who is believed to have killed as many as a dozen women and girls, was confirmed to be on Kathy Halle's clothing, authorities said.Authorities believe Halle was abducted in March 1979 after leaving her North Aurora apartment complex. In her third day of testimony on Tuesday, Khazar Momeni, the sister of Nima Momeni who is on trial for the alleged murder of Cash App founder Bob Lee, testified again that Lee had never touched her.Prosecutors have insisted that Nima Momeni believed Lee had been involved with his sister, offering a motive for why Momeni allegedly stabbed Lee to death. Hurricane Kristy strengthens into a Category 2 storm in the Pacific Ocean

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Hurricane Kristy strengthened into a Category 2 storm in the Pacific Ocean on Wednesday and was expected to remain away from land as it quickly grows more powerful, forecasters said.The storm was 595 miles (960 kilometers) southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula of Mexico, and was moving west at 20 mph (31 kph). It had maximum sustained winds of 100 mph (155 kph), according to the Miami-based National Hurricane Center.Kristy became a tropical storm Monday off of Mexico’s southern Pacific coast before strengthening Tuesday into a Category 1 hurricane.
