“All good here.”Those were some of the final words that the doomed Titan submersible crew communicated before the submersible imploded on its mission to the Titanic wreckage site in June 2023.The message, revealed as part of the Coast Guard’s Monday hearing into the circumstances of the failed mission, was sent to support vessel Polar Prince on June 18, 2023, shortly before the submersible imploded, killing all five of its crew members. It was an incident that captivated both sides of the Atlantic as crews made a mad dash to save the crew after the sub lost contact with the surface - with the world unaware that the lives had been lost. The Coast Guard played an animated re-enactment of the Titan’s voyage that captured the submersible’s final, spotty exchange with the Polar Prince, during the Monday hearing that shed new light […]

More men accuse ex-Abercrombie boss over sex events

More men have come forward to the BBC accusing the former chief executive of Abercrombie & Fitch and his British partner of sexual exploitation. Some allege they were abused, and some that they were injected with drugs.Luke says he was shocked as he was guided into Mike Jeffries’ presidential suite in a hotel in Spain. "It was like a movie set of an Abercrombie store," he recalls of the event in 2011. "And I thought we were going to do a photoshoot."He says the room was dimly lit with erotic photos of men’s abs adorning the dark walls. In the middle, a group of assistants dressed in Abercrombie & Fitch uniforms - polos, blue jeans and flip-flops - were casually folding clothes on a table, pretending to be shop workers, he says. Then aged 20, Luke says he had been offered […]

Russian President Putin underlines importance of freedom of speech

Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized the importance of freedom of speech and information in an address to a media summit on Saturday, in comments seen as absurd by critics of his policy of eliminating dissent."At a time when the complicated process of multipolarity is developing, it is particularly important to protect the principles of information reliability," Putin said in a video message to the participants of the BRICS media summit in Moscow on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of TASS state news agency."Real freedom of speech, which reflects different opinions, enables the search for compromises and common approaches to solving the world's problems," Putin added.Media play a significant role in building a just world order by giving people "an objective and unadulterated picture of the world," Putin said. However, Russians have little in the way of freedom of speech and […]

Auto parts and dollar store execs warn that low-income Americans are stretched thin and running on borrowed time

Retail sales held up surprisingly well over the summer in spite of concerns about a sharper slowdown. The picture is more complicated among lower-income shoppers, auto parts and dollar store execs say. These households could start to see signs of relief if the Fed moves to cut interest rates next week.As the summer comes to a close, it seems that most of the worst-case economic scenarios have been avoided. The relief was apparent during the most recent earnings cycle as retailers reported sales that held up surprisingly well in spite of concerns about a sharper slowdown.Share prices for Walmart and Costco continue to reach all-time highs as inflation-weary consumers flock to value-oriented retailers, and investors largely forgave home improvement suppliers for soft sales during the quarter.Given rising home values, strong employment figures, a booming stock market, and cooling inflation, US household finances appear […]

Abortion rights rallies take aim at Evansville Right to Life dinner

EVANSVILLE — No one grows up hoping to have an abortion."Nobody says, 'I can't wait to grow up, get pregnant and have an abortion. I'm looking forward to my first abortion, can't wait to do it,'' Nina Bambina said to a group gathered at the Evansville riverfront Thursday. "It is not something women relish. It's not something that women enjoy."Bambina was one of about 20 individuals gathered as a part of a rally for reproductive rights at the Four Freedoms Monument. Some of the group had joined from another rally, happening directly outside the annual Right to Life of Southwest Indiana banquet at Old National Events Plaza where a sold out crowd of more than 2,000 people listened to former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow speak against abortion. The group on the riverfront stood and listened as Bambina told the story of […]

Scientists Puzzled by Hundreds of Little Red Dots in James Webb Images of Distant Universe

Red EraEarlier this year, astronomers revealed one of the James Webb Space Telescope's most spectacular and intriguing discoveries yet — and that's saying something.Lying in one of the most ancient regions of the observable universe, they found, were hundreds of galaxies that have come to be known as the "Little Red Dots."These aren't ordinary galaxies. As Smithsonian Institution astrophysicist Fabio Pacucci explains in an essay for The Conversation, these compact red structures, which are only about two percent the size of the Milky Way, puzzle astronomers. The issue is that they can't determine what they are, because observing them through different mediums each points to them being a different kind of object.Deepening the mystery, the Little Red Dots were only visible for a period of around one billion years, about 600 to 800 million years after the Big Bang. Now, they're nowhere to […]
