My cat explains ranked-choice voting

The election is less than one week away — but what’s sooner than that? Halloween. And what’s sooner than that? My cat’s birthday. Her name is Sally Carrera and we got her a month ago during a Halloween sale at the shelter. Yes, she was a discount cat. And yes, the shelter named her after the Porsche from the animated movie Cars. In honor of this very special day, I made everyone I know help me pick the best photo of Sally through ranked-choice voting.  There were five photos to choose from, and endorsements were made. Mission Local’s donor engagement lead Vicky Anibarro ran attack ads on our office Slack against the photo of Sally reading Proust. Editor Lydia Chavez said she would vote for the photo of postpartum Sally because she “supports women.” Then ballots were filled out. Everyone could rank as […]

How an old carwash became a key issue in S.F.’s District 5 race

A go-to criticism against District 5 Supervisor Dean Preston from his opponents — in and out of politics — is that he blocks housing. Candidates hoping to unseat him in next week’s election point to sites like 400 Divisadero St., the location of the long-shuttered Touchless Car Wash, as a prime example.  A billboard on Divisadero, paid for by the public pressure group GrowSF, reads, “That car wash should be affordable homes: Bilal Mahmood will fix it.” Mahmood and fellow supervisor candidate Scotty Jacobs doubled down on Preston bashing with a Halloween-themed mock “funeral” this weekend at the carwash site, replete with cardboard tombstones lamenting the “death” of would-be homes at different addresses around the city. But the truth is more complicated: A developer acquired 400 Divisadero St. in June, and it is expected to become more than 200 units of housing. So why […]

S.F. residents to get refund after $24M Recology overcharge

San Francisco residents are due for some payback after embattled refuse collector Recology admitted that it incorrectly calculated its rates and would have overcharged city customers by some $24 million. This came about, the company says, due to accounting errors that led to the rate being set too high in Rate Year 2024, which ran from Oct. 1, 2023 to Sept. 30, 2024. This discrepancy came to light at the Sept. 30 meeting of the little-known Refuse Rate Board, a body created after 71 percent of voters approved Proposition F in June 2022. San Francisco residents will see a credit on their November bills, with an average benefit of $18 per year for two years, according to Jay Liao, the city’s refuse rates administrator.  “In the wake of the public corruption scandal between Mohammed Nuru and Recology and the Parks Alliance, I brought […]

Crisis-hit VW eyeing plant closures, deep pay cuts: report

Volkswagen is considering closing several plants in Germany and slashing salaries by 10 percent as the ailing auto giant pursues a drastic cost-cutting plan, a media report said Monday. Workers' representatives will update VW staff at all 10 German plants about management's latest savings proposals at 1000 GMT, with many bracing for news of thousands of job cuts. Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume is seeking around four billion euros ($4.3 billion) in cost savings at the group's VW brand, according to the Handelsblatt financial daily, citing company sources. To achieve that, VW could close several factories in Germany -- a first in the company's 87-year history. VW is also eyeing a 10-percent pay cut for all remaining staff and no salary increases in 2025 and 2026, Handelsblatt said. Bonus reductions are also on the table. The plans are likely to meet […]

Safaí chaperones Farrell, ‘mi amigo,’ through Excelsior

For the last two weeks before the election, Mission Local’s campaign dispatches are switching daily between the major candidates. Today: Ahsha Safaí. Read earlier dispatches here.Since Ahsha Safaí declared his candidacy for mayor in May 2023, he has walked the Mission Street corridor in the Excelsior many times, asking shop owners to put a Safaí sign in the window and asking residents for their vote. Nowadays, however, Safaí has company — Mark Farrell, his opponent in the mayoral race, with whom he recently formed a ranked-choice voting alliance, one that can only help Farrell as the termed-out District 11 supervisor will likely be the first of the frontrunners to have his votes redistributed.    So on Thursday, Safaí took on the staffer-like role of introducing Farrell to business owners. When Farrell ran into his linguistic limitations with Spanish-speaking voters, Safaí helped to translate. “My […]

The California exodus has continued. Here’s where most people leaving the Golden State moved to — and why.

Between 2022 and 2023, over 690,100 people left California, according to new census data.Movers were motivated by economic and personal reasons, including the cost of living and home ownership.Just over 422,000 people also moved into the Golden State during that same time period, data shows.Kellee Speakman, a native Californian, started dreaming about life in Texas in 2022.The 50-year-old elementary school teacher and self-identified conservative was frustrated with California's COVID-19 policies and intrigued by Texans proudly flaunting their "freedoms," Speakman told Business Insider earlier this year. So, in January 2022, Speakman and her family packed up and left Temecula, California, for the Dallas-Fort Worth area. But it only took four months for Speakman to start planning her return to California, citing Texas' higher-than-expected cost of living and politics."I was really depressed in Texas. I was daydreaming about home constantly," Speakman said. The family was […]

Dyke March holds town hall to test waters for resuming the march

Calling the San Francisco Dyke March “a hell of a lot more than a walk in the neighborhood with a banner” organizers Saturday tried to reinvigorate enthusiasm for the march, which was canceled in June. “It’s about community organizing. It’s about engagement,” said M Rocket, a member of a new steering committee. “It’s about deciding what’s important to us and what is on the banners that we hold. It’s about including all of us, our giant dike community.”Organizers of today’s first town hall held at the Chan National Queer Arts Center are all members of the new interim steering committee that includes Rocket, Ruth Villasenor, Crystal Mason and Celestina Pearl. The former board disbanded after canceling the march that generally happens on the […]
