Bissap Baobab can stay open till 4 a.m. on weekends, city says

Weekend nights on Mission Street just got a little longer. The San Francisco Entertainment Commission voted unanimously today to approve Bissap Baobab’s request to stay open until 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. The commission’s discussion of the matter took all of five minutes. Shortly before 6 p.m. on Tuesday, after commissioners noted that there was no documented opposition to the late night permit, the five of them voted to give the go-ahead.Marco Senghor, the eatery’s owner, said he feels excited to be able to offer his signature Senegalese hospitality just a little later on weekend nights. At the hearing, a representative of the restaurant said weekend parties would offer flamenco, Afrobeats, salsa, and more. The late night hours won’t necessarily mean late night drinking, however: By state law, alcohol must stop being served at 2 a.m. Senghor, for his part, […]

DNC Hits Trump Where It Hurts With Scathing Supercut Aimed At His Newest Sore Spot

The Democratic National Convention on Tuesday debuted a new video hitting at what is rapidly becoming a major sore spot for Donald Trump: his weirdness.Democratic politicians and others on the left have taken to describing Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), as “weird.”And the former president doesn’t like it at all, as he’s repeatedly denied being weird in recent weeks. The new clip is likely to push his buttons even more, calling him not only weird ― but dangerous:The “weird” attacks are eating at Trump enough that he keeps bringing it up in interviews and at rallies.“She actually called me ‘weird,’” he said last week of Vice President Kamala Harris. “And she called JD and I ‘weird.’ He’s not weird, he was a great student at Yale.”At another event earlier this month, he said he and Vance are […]

New Reparations Ideas Include Senior Housing, Legal Assistance and a ‘Black Card’ for Local Discounts

Just over a week after the U.S. Supreme Court gutted affirmative action in college admissions, San Francisco took a major step in the other direction by advancing a plan to repair historical harms by the government against Black people. After dozens of meetings over two years, the San Francisco African American Reparations Advisory Committee  released its final recommendations to the Board of Supervisors and Mayor London Breed on Friday. Beyond policy ideas in a December 2022 draft report such as $5 million cash payments to qualifying Black San Franciscans, the committee added dozens of new recommendations such as the creation of a “Black card” program offering free access to city services and discounts at businesses. The proposal would also further shake up politics, adding two Board of Supervisors appointees to the Police Commission, including someone who has been incarcerated. The […]

At chants of “Kamala escucha estamos en la lucha” and “Si se puede” — “Kamala, listen we’re in this fight” and “Yes we can” — about 100 people marched on Mission Street this afternoon on their way to City Hall, demanding a path to legalization for millions of undocumented immigrants.   The group started its 48-mile march in San Jose on Saturday with only one goal in mind: To send a clear message to presumed Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris during the party’s national convention in Chicago to renew H.R. 1511. Volunteers march through Mission Street on their way to City Hall. “We want the law to be updated so it can provide legal status to millions of workers who contribute everyday to this economy,” said Xochilt Nuñez, a farmer who came from Fresno to participate in the march. “This is […]

How the full moon affects your sleep

Moon enthusiasts were in for a real treat on Monday (19 August) night, as a blue supermoon graced our skies and lit up the night. The phenomenon marked the first of four supermoons over the next four months. Supermoons occur when the moon is at its closest point in its orbit to the earth at the same time as a full moon - making it look bigger and brighter. In addition, a blue moon occurs every two or three years. While we typically see 12 full moons each year, the moon cycles sometimes don’t quite add up to 365 or 366 days in a calendar year, which means a 13th full moon is seen - referred to as a ‘blue moon’.If you missed last night’s supermoon, you’ll still have the next three months to catch the phenomenon. But, while humans are fascinated […]

There are still too few teachers across the city, enrollment is declining, and the state has stepped in to manage a budget shortfall and propose cuts. But on Monday, it was mostly smiles and delighted squeals at the schoolhouse gates. Marshall Elementary At Marshall Elementary School at 1575 15th St., students and parents trickled into the front gates at 8:30 a.m. Kindergarteners took turns taking pictures in front of a blue-and-white poster reading “Bienvenidos,” surrounded by colored balloons. “I’m […]
