What to expect from the new Boeing 777-9 – the world’s longest and widest passenger plane

Last week Jack Hayward, senior first officer at British Airways, tweeted: “Exciting times as BA announces the intention to operate Boeing 777-9 aircraft as part of our fleet. There has never been a better time to join us – flying the biggest and best jets to all four corners of the globe.” He was writing shortly after America’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) granted permission for Boeing to conduct the first certification flights of its new jet. It’s not hard to see why a pilot might be excited at the prospect of the 777-9. After the four-engine Boeing 747 flew into the history books of most airlines during the pandemic and Airbus scrapped production of its double-decker successor, the A380 superjumbo, the world has needed a new giant of the skies. Boeing – and Hayward – are convinced that the 777-9 is it.What is […]

As Statewide Eviction Protections Expire, SF Measure Kicks In

Although a state measure to prevent evictions for tenants with pending rent relief applications expired Thursday, some tenants in San Francisco and Los Angeles counties saw a glimmer of hope as previously voided local protections kicked back in. “The state’s decision to let the last of its emergency eviction protections expire prioritizes big landlords and real estate industry profits over stabilizing the low-income households and communities of color most impacted by the pandemic,” said Molly Goldberg, director of the San Francisco Anti-Displacement Coalition. She cited language and access barriers, in addition to ending the application period and preempting local evictions in March. The state said that it has paid out “completed eligible applications,” though an additional 6,000 applications are pending due to applicants being unresponsive to requests for additional documentation, said Geoffrey Ross, deputy of federal financial assistance at the […]

District 1 candidates on Richmond seniors’ access to rest of the city

Welcome back to our weekly “Meet the Candidates” series, in which District 1 supervisorial candidates who have filed to run respond to a question in 100 words or fewer. Answers are published each week, but we are also archiving each answer on this page for District 1, to make it easier for voters to browse. Next week, I will be on the mayoral campaign trail. Reach me at junyao@missionlocal.com. For seniors living in the Richmond, one of San Francisco’s outermost neighborhoods, a dominant concern is transit, especially medical transportation for seniors. U.S. Treasuries not the safe bet they once were, research says

By Ann Saphir and Howard SchneiderJACKSON HOLE, Wyoming (Reuters) -No safer than a bund. Or a gilt. Or an OAT.Long touted as hands-down the world's "safe haven" securities, the behavior of U.S. Treasuries during and after the COVID-19 pandemic calls that label into question, suggesting they are little different from the debt issued by the likes of Germany, Britain, France, or even big corporations. That's the key finding of new research presented at the Kansas City Fed's annual research conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. It examines a shift in investor behavior in that period that raises questions about the "exorbitant privilege" the U.S. government has long enjoyed to borrow broadly on the global market even as federal budget gaps grow ever wider. It's a timely question given growing deficits are seen as a near certainty regardless of who becomes the next U.S. […]
