Unusually cold storm that frosted West Coast peaks provided a hint of winter in August

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ski season is still at least several months away, but the unusually cold storm that frosted West Coast mountain peaks late last week brought a hint of winter in August. The calendar briefly skipped ahead to November as the system dropped out of the Gulf of Alaska, down through the Pacific Northwest and into California.Mount Rainier, southeast of Seattle, got a high-elevation dusting, as did central Oregon's Mt. Bachelor resort.“We were excited to see flakes flying!” Mt. Bachelor communications manager Presley Quon said Monday in an email to The Associated Press. “A nice reminder that ski season is around the corner.”Mount Shasta, the Cascade Range volcano that rises to 14,163 feet (4,317 meters) above far northern California, wore a white blanket after the storm clouds passed. The mountain's Helen Lake, which sits at 10,400 feet (3,170 meters) received […]

Greek-flagged tanker is burning after Houthi attacks, but no sign of oil spill

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A Greek-flagged tanker repeatedly attacked by Yemen's Houthi rebels in the Red Sea remains ablaze but hasn't sprung a major oil leak in the waterway, a European Union naval command said Monday. The attack on the Sounion marks the most serious assault in weeks by the rebels, who continue to target shipping through the Red Sea corridor over the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip. The attacks have disrupted the $1 trillion in trade that typically passes through the region, as well as halting some aid shipments to conflict-ravaged Sudan and Yemen.Images published by the EU's Operation Aspides, whose mission is to protect shipping in the area, showed smoke rising from multiple points along the Sounion's deck and its bridge Sunday. Fires could be seen burning in at least nine different locations on the deck […]

A San Francisco Palestinian corner store clerk builds community

His wife’s chocolate chip cookies sit in a basket on the check-out counter. A faded magazine clipping of him and his three sons is tacked up between shelves of liquor. A sign outside encourages anyone who is hungry to inquire within, where a special rack of assorted foods is available for those in need. For Imad Shaheen, owner of Key Food Market in the Lower Haight, it all comes down to caring for his people. “It’s a community, more than just a business,” Shaheen said, speaking from behind the counter at his shop on the corner of Fillmore and Oak streets. “It started like just a business operation, but now you know everybody by name, know their family, know their stories … so it becomes a mixture of business and friendship.” Neighbors come to the shop to celebrate their birthdays, play a tune […]
