Mission artists to be evicted from longtime art warehouse
Back in the 1990s at the Engine Works building at Capp and 17th, B-boys danced, the Mission Burrito Project passed out food to the homeless, and members of the Mission School art movement hung out, including photographer David Schubert and artist Margaret Kilgallen, who painted a mural in the building (it’s since been removed). Fast forward two decades and the converted warehouse was still an arts scene: The beach goth band The Growlers performed secret concerts, punk rock bands recorded albums, and bike messengers idled between deliveries. Using the space now are an artist who paints sideshows and city life, a mechanical engineer who builds lighting contraptions with LEDs, and a DJ who creates digital art to be projected during performances.But now that legacy is threatened. An 18-year-old schoolboy was shot and killed by so-called cow protection vigilantes in India after they chased him for miles over suspicion of being involved in cattle smuggling.The incident took place in Faridabad in the northern Indian state of Haryana on 23 August, days after a migrant worker was beaten to death by another cow vigilante group in the state’s Charkhi Dadri district over suspicion of consuming beef.Cows are considered sacred and worshipped by many Hindus, the religion that makes up a large majority of India’s population. SF stabbing suspect goes on hit-and-run rampage
A stabbing suspect yesterday led police on a destructive chase throughout San Francisco during which he purportedly “attempted homicides with a vehicle,” striking multiple pedestrians. He is also accused of intentionally ramming a police vehicle in Dolores Park before eventually being captured. At just after 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, police responded to a stabbing scene in the 400 block of Broderick near Divisadero. The suspect drove south toward Fell; his alleged victim was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. During the suspect’s flight, he is accused of striking multiple pedestrians and vehicles. Police distinguished “attempted homicides with a vehicle” and “aggravated assaults with a vehicle on pedestrians and Emergency personnel throughout San Francisco.” Multiple victims were hospitalized. Donald Trump on Sunday tried to defend himself from the criminal charges he’s facing in the election interference case ― but experts say it sounded more like a confession.Trump on Fox News bragged that his poll numbers go up every time he’s indicted.“Whoever heard, you get indicted for interfering with a presidential election, where you have every right to do it, you get indicted, and your poll numbers go up,” he said.Trump is facing charges in multiple jurisdictions and cases, including election interference in a criminal case filed in federal court in Washington. Fire strikes two-unit building on Balmy Alley
A fire broke out in a two-unit building at 50 Balmy Alley on Saturday evening, according to the San Francisco Fire Department. The building is located near Harrison, between 24th and 25th streets.There were no injuries, and no one was displaced, said the SFFD. The fire department is conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire.A group of people working a taco stand in the alley on Sunday morning said they witnessed the fire, and saw a lot of smoke but no flames. SAS hero of Iran embassy siege and daring Falklands raids dies
An SAS hero who took part in the Iranian embassy siege and helped in raids during the Falklands War has died aged 82.John Thompson, warrant officer, died on Saturday evening after a period of ill health.His death was announced in a post shared by the chief executive of a charity that provides career advice to military veterans and their family members.Neil Houlihan, chief executive of Project Recce, said: “It is with great sadness that I share the news of the passing of John Thompson last night.
