JD Vance chose a disturbing location for his Arizona campaign stop

JD Vance sure picked the perfect place to host his latest campaign rally in Arizona. Perfect, because it aligns exactly with his bigoted, chauvinistic worldview. Vance’s event, co-hosted by Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, was held Wednesday at Generation Church in Mesa, Arizona, and featured extremist pastor Ryan Visconti.Visconti has literally told his followers “Christians can’t vote Democrat.” In addition to parroting right-wing talking points about elections, Visconti has also spewed plenty of anti-LGBTQ venom via his social media accounts. And his views about women aren’t any better. Julie Roys, a Christian reporter whose work focuses on fundamentalism and Christian nationalism, found social media posts from Visconti in 2022 in which he said a strong woman with a weak husband “will become a toxic woman” and another in which he said domestic abuse isn’t a biblically justifiable reason for divorce.“Although […]

Summer Fun, Food, and Shopping at Peddler’s Village

Heading to the shore is the default summer trip, but this year the thought of crowded boardwalks, beach traffic, and shielding a bucket of French fries from dive-bombing seagulls had me less than enthusiastic. Instead, I headed to Peddlers Village in the rolling countryside of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. One of the state’s most unique destinations, Peddler’s Village is a colonial 18th-century style village with over 65+ open-air shops, a 66 room inn, and even a restored working 1922 antique carousel. With 7 full service restaurants, a taproom, a wine tasting room, and gourmet treats of all kinds, Peddler’s Village is a playground for foodies. With Pennsylvania country charm nestled in every corner, Peddlers Village is like a real life Mayberry that attracts visitors from all over year-round. One of my favorite things about Peddler’s Village is that in between […]

Honduran president faces call to resign as video scandal intensifies

TEGUCIGALPA (Reuters) - A leading anti-corruption activist called on Honduran President Xiomara Castro on Wednesday to resign after a video surfaced that appeared to show her brother-in-law negotiating campaign donations with drug traffickers over a decade ago.The video emerged a week after the leftist Castro ordered an end to an extradition treaty with the United States, which was used to take her conservative predecessor to face trial in New York where he was convicted on charges stemming from large-scale cocaine trafficking. In a letter to Castro posted on social media, Gabriela Castellanos, the head of the National Anti-Corruption Council, argued the president should resign due to "serious drug trafficking accusations brought against (your) family circle."If Castro stays on, it would undermine the rule of law and security in the Central American nation, she added. Her letter did not provide evidence of […]

SF poised to beat DOJ to the punch, ban rent-fixing software

The city of San Francisco has lost over 60,000 residents since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic according to the census (3,660 in 2020; 55,136 in 2021; 4,605 in 2022). There’s been a bit of a resurgence since then; 2023 shows a net gain of a whole 276 people. But still, that’s a lot of missing persons in a city of a little over 800,000. Why is it that rent payments, while still lower than the recent peak in 2019, are still so high? Is there someone we can blame? On Tuesday afternoon, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors moved one step closer to answering that question, by passing an ordinance authored by Supervisor Aaron Peskin banning the sale or use of any algorithmic device that sets, or even  recommends, rents or vacancy levels for residential properties in San Francisco.  If it’s […]
