Dolores Huerta, la célebre líder sindical y cofundadora de la Unión de Campesinos junto a César Chávez, se ha involucrado en la contienda por la alcaldía de San Francisco.
El viernes, Huerta apoyó la reelección de la alcaldesa London Breed, señalando específicamente el trabajo de Breed durante la pandemia, cuando los residentes latinos se vieron afectados por la epidemia Covid-19 a un nivel sin precedentes.
“No solo demostró su liderazgo durante la pandemia, proporcionando una de las respuestas de salud pública más fuertes del país, sino también brindando recursos esenciales para apoyar a los más afectados por el COVID-19, como los trabajadores latinos esenciales de bajos ingresos”, escribió Huerta, de 94 años, en un comunicado, haciendo referencia a la frase que ella misma creó: “¡Sí se puede con London Breed!”.
Dirigentes veteranos del distrito de la Misión reconocen que Huerta es un respaldo muy preciado para la alcaldesa: su elección será automática para muchos votantes latinos, dijo Tracy Gallardo, una de las fundadoras del Latino Task Force, que fue fundamental para abogar por pruebas, vacunas y otras ayudas en la Misión en medio de la pandemia.
“He trabajado en otras campañas donde en el momento en que [Huerta] daba un respaldo, todos los que hacían llamadas a latinos, eso era lo que usábamos”. La respuesta, dijo Gallardo, era inmediata: “¿Oh, Dolores Huerta? Sí, claro que sí. ¿Por quién quieres que vote? De acuerdo”. Mencionas a Dolores Huerta, lo pones en un volante y lo distribuyes, ya tienes el voto.”
Aun así, aunque Huerta destacó la respuesta de Breed ante la pandemia, a los latinos no les fue bien en San Francisco durante el punto álgido del Covid. San Francisco actuó rápidamente en los primeros días y tuvo una tasa de infección general más baja, pero los latinos en la ciudad lo pasaron peor que los latinos en otras partes del país más afectadas, como encontró Mission Local en 2020.
Breed no respondió de inmediato al trabajo de UCSF y al de Latino Task Force; los expertos estaban perplejos por la falta de atención de la ciudad en la realización de pruebas a los residentes latinos en los primeros meses. Pero a finales de 2020, adoptó la estrategia de centros comunitarios, que fueron clave en las pruebas y vacunación, y destinó $28.5 millones de dólares a diversos esfuerzos contra el Covid por parte de organizaciones latinas.
La alcaldesa ha promocionado repetidamente su liderazgo durante la pandemia en su campaña, y Gallardo dijo que Breed salvó vidas durante el Covid al trabajar con el Latino Task Force.
“Nos dio los recursos de emergencia que necesitábamos, y sigue apoyando ese trabajo”, dijo Gallardo, quien expresó su apoyo a Breed. “Las 12,000 personas que atendió el Latino Task Force no habrían sido atendidas sin los recursos que nos dieron. ¿Salvó vidas? Absolutamente”.
En el periodo previo al Día de las Elecciones, los votantes latinos han jugado un papel menos destacado en comparación a otros grupos demográficos, especialmente los votantes asiáticos, y los candidatos rara vez visitan el Distrito de la Misión.
Todos los candidatos a la alcaldía han trabajado arduamente para acercarse a los votantes en vecindarios con gran población asiática, como Chinatown, Sunset y Portola, buscando captar a un electorado que representa el 37% de la ciudad. Han publicado anuncios en Sing Tao Daily y World Journal, y han asistido a banquetes chinos uno tras otro. La página de apoyos de Breed tiene una sección completa dedicada a “líderes de la comunidad china”.
La alcaldesa ha recorrido la Misión, Gallardo dijo que se ha reunido con ella y otros líderes del Distrito de la Misión, y se unirá a sus rivales en un foro enfocado en latinos en Gray Area, en la Misión, el sábado. Aun así, ninguna de las campañas de los candidatos se ha centrado fuertemente en los latinos, que constituyen el 15.6% de los residentes de la ciudad, según datos del censo.
Huerta reforzará los esfuerzos de Breed. En un comunicado, la alcaldesa calificó a Huerta como una “leyenda viviente” y un “icono de la comunidad latina”, señalando en particular la historia sindical de su familia.
“Mi abuelo fue miembro del Sindicato Internacional de Estibadores y Almacenes, mi madre fue miembro del Sindicato de Trabajadores Local 261, y mi tía y mi tío fueron Teamsters. Y yo soy una orgullosa exmiembro de la Asociación de Ejecutivos Municipales de San Francisco”, dijo.
Sin embargo, el respaldo de Huerta no significó la luna y las estrellas para todos.
“Aunque Dolores Huerta es un ícono para la comunidad latina y laboral, la alcaldesa Breed no lo ha sido en absoluto para las comunidades latina y laboral,” dijo Michael Rouppet, presidente del San Francisco Latinx Democratic Club. Rouppet señaló que Breed no se ha reunido con el grupo, que posteriormente respaldó a su rival, el presidente de la Junta de Supervisores, Aaron Peskin, y que no ha sido receptiva con las preocupaciones del grupo.
“London Breed fue la única candidata que se negó rotundamente a reunirse con el único club demócrata latino aquí en San Francisco”, dijo. “No veo que haya interactuado con nuestro club o con nuestros temas”, agregó, señalando la vigilancia policial, la caótica situación de los vendedores ambulantes a lo largo de Mission Street y el desplazamiento.
Añade a eso las deportaciones: bajo la dirección de Brooke Jenkins, fiscal de distrito designada por Breed, San Francisco ha cooperado con las autoridades federales para deportar a presuntos traficantes de drogas. Ha surgido una narrativa en la ciudad, en parte alimentada por un artículo del San Francisco Chronicle de julio de 2023, que afirma que los hondureños son el pilar del tráfico de fentanilo.
El lunes pasado, defensores públicos se manifestaron en los escalones del Hall of Justice para señalar que un hombre hondureño acusado de tráfico de drogas había sido absuelto por un jurado, que determinó que había sido víctima de trata de personas y obligado a traficar, siendo esta la primera vez que la oficina ganaba tal fallo.
A pesar de la decisión del jurado, Jenkins hasta ahora se ha negado a proporcionarle al hombre los documentos necesarios para una visa U, un tipo de visa destinada a víctimas o testigos de delitos, lo que significa que su permanencia en el país está en peligro.
Según Lariza Dugan-Cuadra, directora ejecutiva de la organización sin fines de lucro CARECEN, centrada en los migrantes centroamericanos, esto refleja un «enfoque subjetivo» del sistema de justicia por parte de la fiscalía, es sintomático de una narrativa más amplia. El uso que hace la ciudad de las deportaciones, dijo, no solo es contraproducente en términos de seguridad pública -al hacer menos probable que los inmigrantes cooperen con las fuerzas del orden-, sino que perpetúa estereotipos negativos y generalizados sobre los centroamericanos.
Y ninguno de los candidatos a la alcaldía ha hecho lo suficiente para llegar a la comunidad migrante para contrarrestar esa narrativa, dijo Dugan-Cuadra.
“Pensamos que es una oportunidad desperdiciada que los candidatos no hablen con las personas que emigran”, dijo, reconociendo que los nuevos inmigrantes no votan, pero diciendo que, no obstante, merecen escuchar a los candidatos a cargos públicos. “Son el motor económico, cultural, de nuestra comunidad”.
Aun así, para Breed, la elección de Huerta es inequívocamente una buena noticia. Falta poco más de un mes para las elecciones, las encuestas están ajustadas y cada voto será importante el 5 de noviembre.
“Me siento honrada de tener a Dolores a mi lado en mi reelección”, dijo Breed en su declaración, “mientras trabajo para defender los mismos derechos y valores que ella ha pasado toda su vida defendiendo”.

S.F. police shoot, kill Dior guard turned alleged hit-and-run driver
San Francisco police shot and killed a purportedly armed man they say they tracked down — after he allegedly hit pedestrians and a cyclist with a car on Thursday evening. Assistant Chief David Lazar, who gave a press conference this morning, said the man was believed to be a security guard at Dior, and said he discovered a firearm “on the ground” at the scene that he believed belonged to the guard. Supervisor Melgar won, now the trick will be to manage her constituents’ competing interests
District 7 incumbent Myrna Melgar faced a particularly bruising re-election campaign.
