Often Wander closing Valencia shop at year’s end

Following on the heels of beloved pizzeria Yellow Moto, which closed its doors at the end of last week, Valencia Street will see another store shutting down at the end of the month. Often Wander, a candles and jewelry store, is closing its shop at 593 Valencia St. on Dec. 31 after six years of greeting customers with their refillable natural soy candles, home fragrances, and jewelry. The business was established in 2012 and moved to Valencia from San Diego. On Monday afternoon, the store at its peak held 10 customers, walking around checking out necklaces and earrings, and sniffing candles. Customers, old and new, told shop owner Sarah Larson how sorry they were that her shop was closing. Larson, however, assured them that this does not mark the end of the store. Often Wander closing by Dec. 31, 2024. Photo by Xueer […]

Maire Farrington has been solo camping on Angel Island for 31 years

If you remember wondering why Mission Local broke the news of the Angel Island ferry’s mechanical failure in September, you may have put two and two together. I was a “direct informant” stranded on Angel Island alongside seven other campers. The city’s ferry had suffered a sewage malfunction. According to the customer service representatives I talked to, campers had never been stranded on the island before. I would soon learn this wasn’t exactly true. Mission Local has learned that the Angel Island ferry is not running today, leaving anyone hoping to return to the mainland today stranded on the island. More when we know more.— Mission Local (@MLNow) September 17, 2024 After plugging my phone into an outlet outside the ranger’s booth, the first call I made was to my editor. “Don’t tell me your boat is sinking,” Joe Eskenazi said.  I was […]

A requiem: The ghosts from 40 years of walking San Francisco

I got my first job in San Francisco nearly 40 years ago, in the Flood Building, at 870 Market Street. A chubby cheerful, uniformed lobby attendant pressed the elevator buttons for me. The lobby was marble and, oh wonderful, there was a Woolworth’s on the ground floor.I loved to sit at the curved Formica lunch counter just like I loved the ladies who served me: bright lipstick, hairnets, and pink puffy-sleeved uniforms. I loved the Coca-Cola glasses and the grilled cheese sandwiches. I felt grown-up: part of a purposeful lunch crowd, we were all very important. (All photos are from the San Francisco Public Library Archive.)Flood Building at Market and Powell streets. Fabric Outlet to close in November after nearly 30 years

Fabric Outlet, the decades-old store on Mission Street for all things sewing — fabrics, trims, notions, yarn and crochet supplies — will close its doors on Nov. 23, its owners announced on Thursday. “This decision has been anything but easy,” the owners said in an Instagram post. “Serving you over the years — sharing in your creativity, your projects, and your love for fabrics — has truly been one of the great joys of our lives.”A closing sale will start on Saturday, with 40 to 75 percent off on fabrics and trims, and 25 percent off on crochet supplies. The owners advised customers to arrive early “for the best selection.”Business has declined since the pandemic, said Gina Cooney, co-owner of Fabric Outlet, in an interview with Mission Local. Located in the basement of 2109 Mission St. at 17th Street, the store […]
