Read in EnglishMission Local Source: missionlocal.org

Cops talk gangs, sideshows at Mission Station community meeting

Sign up below to get Mission Local’s free newsletter, a daily digest of news you won’t find elsewhere. Sideshows were front-of-mind for community members who attended last night’s monthly meeting at the Mission Police Station. When newly appointed station captain Liza Johansen asked the attendees for questions and concerns, sideshows came up as a point of concern for many. Sideshows are unsanctioned car-related stunt shows, often involving huge crowds, loud noises and reckless driving. Many cause heavy traffic bottlenecks around the area and sometimes injuries. The Mission is no stranger to sideshows, however, over the past two years the numbers of stunt shows reported have been on the rise.  According to SFPD open data, 29 stunt shows or instances involving a stunt vehicle have been reported so far this year. Ten of these have taken place somewhere in the Mission. According to the […]

Mission artists to be evicted from longtime art warehouse

Back in the 1990s at the Engine Works building at Capp and 17th, B-boys danced, the Mission Burrito Project passed out food to the homeless, and members of the Mission School art movement hung out, including photographer David Schubert and artist Margaret Kilgallen, who painted a mural in the building (it’s since been removed). Fast forward two decades and the converted warehouse was still an arts scene: The beach goth band The Growlers performed secret concerts, punk rock bands recorded albums, and bike messengers idled between deliveries. Using the space now are an artist who paints sideshows and city life, a mechanical engineer who builds lighting contraptions with LEDs, and a DJ who creates digital art to be projected during performances. But now that legacy is threatened. The artists who live at Engine Works were recently notified that they are being evicted under the […]

Bill on street vending enforcement dies, and Mission vending ban

Nearly three months after Sen. Scott Wiener and Mayor London Breed announced the introduction of a California state bill that would have given police authority to ticket and even arrest people selling stolen goods, the legislation quietly died in the State Assembly.SB 925’s path in Sacramento was cut short on Aug. 15 when it was held under submission, a term used when members of a committee want further discussion. Wiener said, however, in plain words this means his bill is dead. The very next day, on Aug. 16, San Francisco took action by extending the Mission Street vending ban for another six months. The moratorium on street vending, which has been in place since Nov. 27, had been already extended early this year for six months and was set to end on Aug. 27.“I was very disappointed. It’s a high priority […]

March for undocumented rights heads through Mission Street

At chants of “Kamala escucha estamos en la lucha” and “Si se puede” — “Kamala, listen we’re in this fight” and “Yes we can” — about 100 people marched on Mission Street this afternoon on their way to City Hall, demanding a path to legalization for millions of undocumented immigrants.   The group started its 48-mile march in San Jose on Saturday with only one goal in mind: To send a clear message to presumed Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris during the party’s national convention in Chicago to renew H.R. 1511. Volunteers march through Mission Street on their way to City Hall. “We want the law to be updated so it can provide legal status to millions of workers who contribute everyday to this economy,” said Xochilt Nuñez, a farmer who came from Fresno to participate in the march. “This is […]
