One Of The Unhealthiest Beef Stock Brands Is Already In Your Pantry

Stocks and broths are a cornerstone of any kitchen. Store-bought versions enable you to make a dizzying array of soups, sauces, and other dishes without the struggle of making your own stock or broth from scratch. But, the readymade varieties aren’t created equal, with a few brands packing in unhealthy levels of some ingredients while containing little to none of the beneficial nutrients that a good stock should have.

One of these health offenders comes from Nature’s Promise. It’s a brand known for otherwise healthy and organic food at good prices, which makes the appearance of its stock here all the more disappointing. Worse, the brand’s beef-flavored culinary stock that landed it here gets double strikes for having both too much salt and not enough additional nutrients when compared to other brands of stock and broth that we liked.

Why You Should Leave Nature’s Promise Beef Stock On The Shelf

The biggest issue with Nature’s Promise organic beef flavored culinary stock is its sodium content. One serving of the stock contains a staggering 600 milligrams, which is 26% of your daily intake. It could be worse; some stocks have over 800 milligrams, which is about 35% your daily value. But, it could also be much better — Kitchen Basics organic beef stock only has 440 milligrams, or 18% of your daily value. Nature’s Promise also contains a gram of organic cane sugar which, while negligible, is unnecessary.

To its credit, Nature’s Promise beef stock does have some trace nutrients, including a gram of protein, 30 milligrams of calcium, and 10 milligrams of potassium. However, most stocks include varying levels of these same nutrients. The Kitchen Basics stock has a whopping 5 grams of protein and 45 milligrams of potassium, for example, while Texas-based brand H-E-B (which also runs Central Market) has an organic beef stock with 2 grams of protein, 10 milligrams of calcium, and 20 milligrams of potassium.

What do these numbers actually mean when it comes to picking a good beef stock? Essentially, your choice should come down to two things: low sodium content (you can always add more salt later) and good flavor. If you get stuck between a few stocks that meet these points, then you can compare their trace nutrients as a tiebreaker.

The Hayes Valley puppeteer, and his dragon treehouse

It’s not every day that one sees a dragon rising out of San Francisco’s fog. So when I saw a life-sized dragon puppet suspended from a treehouse in Hayes Valley, I knew I had to meet its maker. I slipped a note through the gate of the nearby Victorian and hoped the rain wouldn’t smudge my handwriting. Edward Winslow, a dad, dancer, and internationally-touring puppeteer of 20 years, responded. Winslow, now 64, had the Bay Area version of a storybook childhood: His mom, Marilyn, owned a toy store in Los Altos called Mud Pie and the Jester’s Eye, where she sold handmade Renaissance Faire toys.Winslow, at 11, would play with their stock of finger puppets, but it wasn’t until he moved to New York in the late 1980s that he picked up his first life-sized puppet.  The rain did not deter Edward Winslow […]

Over 900 mobile home owners in Sweetwater, Florida handed move-out notices amid plans to transform park

Over 900 mobile home owners in Sweetwater, Florida handed move-out notices amid plans to transform park Residents of Li'l Abner Mobile Home Park in Sweetwater, Florida, were recently notified that they'll need to find somewhere else to live and quickly. The community of more than 900 mobile homes, together housing roughly 2,000 to 3,000 people per the mayor's estimate, will close in May 2025 to make way for new affordable and workforce housing. Mobile home owners usually own the home but rent the land it stands on. The land owner in this case, CREI Holdings, says it will provide a financial incentive of $14,000 to residents who leave by January 31, 2025. Those who leave by March 31 or April 30, will receive $7,000 and $3,000, respectively, though many tenants say it's not enough time or money, according to a […]

US airline flight crews confident and angry as unions seek richer contracts

By Rajesh Kumar Singh CHICAGO (Reuters) - Alaska Airlines flight attendant Rebecca Owens works 10 hours a day but only gets paid for half that time - a legacy of a common U.S. airline policy to pay cabin crew members only when planes are in motion. Owens, and thousands of cabin crew like her, wants that to change. In August, 68% of Alaska flight attendants in a ratification vote rejected a contract that would have increased average pay by 32% over three years. It was also the first labor agreement that would have legally required airlines to start the clock for paying flight attendants when passengers are boarding, not when the flight starts to taxi down the runway. Delta Air Lines, the only major U.S. airline whose flight attendants are not in a union, instituted boarding pay for its flight […]
