Former Palm Beach County elections official dies while awaiting trial on child porn charges

Article arrow_drop_down

A former information technology manager for the Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections Office facing trial on 2019 battery and child pornography charges has died, according to law-enforcement records.

Jeffrey Darter died Aug. 19 at a residence in The Acreage, an incident report provided by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office showed. He was 66. The agency confirmed it is conducting a death investigation but did not disclose additional details, citing the active investigation. It redacted most of the report it provided.

An attempt to reach Darter’s attorney, Michael Salnick, was unsuccessful. A spokesperson for the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office referred questions to the sheriff’s office.

Court records show Darter was scheduled to appear at a plea hearing on Aug. 21. Salnick instead notified the court of his death. Circuit Judge Cymonie Rowe has directed that a written order formally closing the case be prepared.

Darter worked for the elections office for 28 years. His tenure as its IT manager included the recount in the 2000 presidential election, where Palm Beach County proved decisive in George W. Bush’s narrow victory over Al Gore both in Florida and the national Electoral College.

He faced 30 counts of child pornography and two counts of battery on a law-enforcement officer following his arrest in November 2019. Darter denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty.

At that time, investigators with the South Florida Internet Crimes Against Children task force alleged that he possessed more than 170 images of adults sexually assaulting children. Elections Supervisor Wendy Sartory Link fired him in 2019 after investigators alleged that he shoved two detectives while trying to prevent them from accessing his cellphone.

His case was set to go to trial in October 2023, but was delayed as Darter’s attorneys challenged the legality of a sheriff’s search warrant and sought to suppress evidence investigators had obtained.

Mayor Breed is deleting texts. Legal experts say that’s a problem.

On June 29, Mayor London Breed texted Carla Short, the director of San Francisco Public Works, asking her to send out a crew to pick up trash in the Tenderloin.“I’m at Azalina’s. Are you around? You should stop by,” read the text from Breed, sent at 5:54 p.m. while the mayor was at a Malaysian restaurant near Ellis and Leavenworth streets. “Can you send someone to clean up across the street please. It [sic] a pile of trash on the south west corner.”Short said she was at a Giants game but promised to “send someone now.” “That would be great,” Breed wrote in response. “I want her to succeed but the tents and trash are a problem,” she added, seemingly referencing a homeless woman on the corner. “We will deal with the tents. Thank you and enjoy the game.” That simple […]

Final messages revealed from the Titan sub before tragic implosion

“All good here.”Those were some of the final words that the doomed Titan submersible crew communicated before the submersible imploded on its mission to the Titanic wreckage site in June 2023.The message, revealed as part of the Coast Guard’s Monday hearing into the circumstances of the failed mission, was sent to support vessel Polar Prince on June 18, 2023, shortly before the submersible imploded, killing all five of its crew members. It was an incident that captivated both sides of the Atlantic as crews made a mad dash to save the crew after the sub lost contact with the surface - with the world unaware that the lives had been lost. The Coast Guard played an animated re-enactment of the Titan’s voyage that captured the submersible’s final, spotty exchange with the Polar Prince, during the Monday hearing that shed new light […]
