Cops talk gangs, sideshows at Mission Station community meeting

Sign up below to get Mission Local’s free newsletter, a daily digest of news you won’t find elsewhere. Sideshows were front-of-mind for community members who attended last night’s monthly meeting at the Mission Police Station. When newly appointed station captain Liza Johansen asked the attendees for questions and concerns, sideshows came up as a point of concern for many. Sideshows are unsanctioned car-related stunt shows, often involving huge crowds, loud noises and reckless driving. Many cause heavy traffic bottlenecks around the area and sometimes injuries. The Mission is no stranger to sideshows, however, over the past two years the numbers of stunt shows reported have been on the rise.  According to SFPD open data, 29 stunt shows or instances involving a stunt vehicle have been reported so far this year. Ten of these have taken place somewhere in the Mission. According to the […]

District 5 candidates on Prop. 36 increasing punishment for crimes

Here’s the latest in our “Meet the Candidates” series for District 5, in which we ask each candidate to answer one question per week leading up to the election. Four candidates are challenging incumbent Supervisor Dean Preston to represent District 5, which spans from the east end of Golden Gate Park through Haight-Ashbury, Japantown and the Western Addition, the Lower Haight and Hayes Valley, and most of the Tenderloin.Proposition 47, passed in 2014, made it so some non-violent theft and drug crimes could only be charged as misdemeanors in California. The law has been blamed for homelessness and brazen shoplifting — stealing items worth $950 or less became a misdemeanor under Prop. 47, as did low-level drug possession. This year, legislators are trying to roll that back. Proposition 36, a state ballot measure in the coming election, attempts to crack down on […]

Table for one: Lunette, superb Cambodian stall at the Ferry Building

In 2022, Chef Nite Yun disappointed her legions of Oakland fans by closing Cambodian restaurant, Nyum Bai. San Francisco is now the lucky home of Lunette, her newest venture. It opened in June to much-deserved anticipation and lines of hungry diners waiting for a table or a seat at the counter.  The casual, colorful stall is open to the wide central hallway and has about 10-12 tables and a counter facing the open kitchen where you can watch all the action as you slurp up noodles. The brief menu is divided into Nyum Mee (Eat Noodles) or Nyum Bai (Eat Rice), Snacks & Greens, and Sweets. On a recent visit, I found a seat at the counter at lunch and ordered the Mee Kola:Mee KolaOh, my! Superbly al dente egg noodles resting on a puddle of a sweet soy and garlicky dressing, topped with […]

School Board candidates struggle to stand out on crowded stage

With the San Francisco Unified School District readying to sail off the edge of the map, 10 of the 11 declared Board of Education candidates shared their plans on proposed school closures and the district’s mammoth budget deficit with over 100 community members at a Friday night forum. The 11 candidate, Lefteris Eleftheriou, didn’t attend the forum held at Gordon J. Lau Elementary School and moderated by Crystal Van and Emily Fung of Chinese for Affirmative Action. The overcrowded stage made it de facto difficult for the candidates to differentiate themselves. That, however, didn’t seem to apply to candidate Matt Alexander, the only incumbent in the race. While his nine competitors cited their prior work experiences in other industries or presented their visions for education, Alexander enjoyed an unparalleled advantage as he was able to list his accomplishments as a board member. From […]

National Coffee Day with Karl

National Coffee Day is September 29th 2024 HISTORY OF NATIONAL COFFEE DAY The history of National Coffee Day seems a bit, well, cloudy. We believe September 29 came about as a jolting reminder to get back to work following a long summer — even though it’s a full week after the first day of fall. After all, Americans have turned procrastination into an art form. On the other hand, the history of coffee itself clearly goes back to 15th century Yemen. (Check out Dave Eggers’ recent book for a fascinating look at how it all went down.) As for Europeans, they got their first taste about 100 years later — with Venice leading the way. Per the National Coffee Association, it wasn’t a smooth ride: “Some people reacted to this new beverage with suspicion or fear, calling it the ‘bitter […]
