Underdog S.F. mayoral candidates take stage

Most of San Francisco’s mayoral race has centered on five candidates: Mayor London Breed, Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin, District 11 Supervisor Ahsha Safaí, former District 2 Supervisor and caretaker mayor Mark Farrell, and Levi Strauss heir and nonprofit founder Daniel Lurie.Barring a truly cataclysmic event, one of those five will win. They have the most name recognition, decades of political experience between them, sophisticated teams of campaigners, and gobs of cash. Together, the candidates or the PACs supporting them have raised $22.9 million — the other eight candidates in the race have just shy of $144,000.But it costs only $7,020 to run for mayor, and that has brought out a cohort of underdogs, striving for votes.Five of them got that chance on Saturday morning in the Mission, during a Latino-focused debate at Gray Area on Mission Street.

Read in EnglishMission Local Source: missionlocal.org

Fabric Outlet to close in November after nearly 30 years

Fabric Outlet, the decades-old store on Mission Street for all things sewing — fabrics, trims, notions, yarn and crochet supplies — will close its doors on Nov. 23, its owners announced on Thursday. “This decision has been anything but easy,” the owners said in an Instagram post. “Serving you over the years — sharing in your creativity, your projects, and your love for fabrics — has truly been one of the great joys of our lives.”A closing sale will start on Saturday, with 40 to 75 percent off on fabrics and trims, and 25 percent off on crochet supplies. The owners advised customers to arrive early “for the best selection.”Business has declined since the pandemic, said Gina Cooney, co-owner of Fabric Outlet, in an interview with Mission Local. S.F. Housing Authority moves to replace troubled firm managing public housing

The Eugene Burger Management Corporation, a scandal-ridden private firm that has overseen two of San Francisco public housing complexes since 2022, may not have a long future in the city. A representative from the company typically provides a update on the Potrero Hill and Sunnydale public housing sites before the San Francisco Housing Authority Board of Commissioners each month. But at today’s meeting, Housing Authority CEO Tonia Lediju gave a brief announcement that the agency would be issuing a request for proposal for property management at those locations. Lediju provided little additional information. The expected update from Eugene Burger Management about happenings at the sites did not occur. “As it relates to Sunnydale and Potrero, we are going to be putting out our RFP, request for proposal, for property management,” Lediju said. “And we just wanted to advise you of that.” The commissioners […]

Ex-SF cop may testify killer acted in self-defense

A longtime San Francisco police inspector and use-of-force trainer who believes it “likely” that Nima Momeni stabbed CashApp founder Bob Lee in self-defense may be called to testify before a jury in coming weeks. Today, during a pretrial hearing before San Francisco Superior Court Judge Alexandra Gordon, retired officer Steve Pomatto said it was “the most likely scenario” that Momeni struggled to pin Lee’s hand, which carried a knife, and that resulted in Lee being stabbed three times in April 2023. “Everything else just doesn’t seem as reasonable as the conclusion that I came up with,” Pomatto said, “or that, in my opinion, the physical and digital evidence supports.”Though prosecutor Assistant District Attorney Omid Talai tried today to have Pomatto, a defense witness, excluded from the trial altogether, Gordon reserved her decision for after Momeni’s own testimony, which is expected in coming […]

Doctor to testify Nima Momeni turned Lee’s knife on him

A doctor and former medical examiner, who is being brought into court as an expert witness by the defense, is expected to testify that CashApp founder Bob Lee may have been holding the knife he was killed with last year. The defense contends that in self-defense, Nima Momeni, the man on trial for Lee’s murder, turned it around on him. John Marraccini, a witness expected to testify in Momeni’s defense in coming weeks, suggested today during a hearing in San Francisco Superior Court that the evidence in the case was consistent with someone defensively turning the knife on Lee on April 4, 2023. The prosecution is likely to argue that Momeni attacked Lee from the front. That night, Lee and Momeni left a party together at the Millennium Tower home of Momeni’s sister, Khazar, and stood together in the Rincon Hill neighborhood, […]
