Safaí chaperones Farrell, ‘mi amigo,’ through Excelsior

For the last two weeks before the election, Mission Local’s campaign dispatches are switching daily between the major candidates. Today: Ahsha Safaí. Read earlier dispatches here.Since Ahsha Safaí declared his candidacy for mayor in May 2023, he has walked the Mission Street corridor in the Excelsior many times, asking shop owners to put a Safaí sign in the window and asking residents for their vote. Nowadays, however, Safaí has company — Mark Farrell, his opponent in the mayoral race, with whom he recently formed a ranked-choice voting alliance, one that can only help Farrell as the termed-out District 11 supervisor will likely be the first of the frontrunners to have his votes redistributed.    So on Thursday, Safaí took on the staffer-like role of introducing Farrell to business owners. When Farrell ran into his linguistic limitations with Spanish-speaking voters, Safaí helped to translate. “My […]

Safaí and Farrell form an alliance. Why?

Mission Local is publishing campaign dispatches for each of the major contenders in the mayor’s race, alternating among candidates weekly until November. This week: Ahsha Safaí. Read earlier dispatches here. To the surprise of some, Ahsha Safaí, the District 11 supervisor and mayoral candidate from a working-class district, formed an alliance last week with Mark Farrell, the venture capitalist who once represented District 2, one of the wealthiest in the city. Both say they will ask their supporters to rank each other second on the ballot — although on Farrell’s social media post about ranked-choice voting Thursday, he only asked voters to “rank Ahsha Safaí on your ballot,” not necessarily second. In the ranked-choice voting system, voters can, in order of preference, rank up to 10 candidates. If voters follow the advice, the alliance will give Farrell a boost, as Safaí is running […]

Safaí supports both Prop. M and L, but one may nullify the other

Mission Local is publishing campaign dispatches for each of the major contenders in the mayor’s race, alternating among candidates weekly until November. This week: Ahsha Safaí. Read earlier dispatches here.Ahsha Safaí arrived at the Thursday “Yes on M” gathering at Castro Theater about twenty minutes late, missing his speaking slot for the measure that would change San Francisco’s business tax structure, making the city rely less on companies’ payroll expenses.Instead, it would be more dependent on the revenue a company earns in the city. As a result, It would remove the tax incentives for businesses to keep workers out of the city.  This proposition would also change the threshold of a small business exempt from gross receipt taxes, from $2.25 million to $5 million. And, a number of fees that small businesses pay would be eliminated. In effect, as Mission Local’s Joe […]

Safaí, city planner, talks transit, trees, rent control with architects

On Tuesday evening, Ahsha Safaí, the District 11 supervisor and mayoral candidate, was at a small event with architects at the William Duff Architects firm — an audience, more or less of his peers, for the MIT-trained city planner. After a longer-than-expected Board of Supervisors meeting, Safaí arrived at the firm’s kitchen around 6 p.m., about half an hour behind schedule. There was sparkling water, cashews in paper cones and a bottle of Excelsior wine — a fitting vintage for the Excelsior supervisor.Since the start of the year, the architectural firm has invited all leading mayoral candidates for a meet-and-greet, and this was the last. The firm, on Folsom and 9th streets, is located in a space transformed from a previous carpet store, with high wooden ceilings and a living tree growing in its center.  It was evident from the beginning that […]

Safaí knows Miranda well: He was the political director for Local 87, which represents janitors, from 2008 to 2016, working on signing up new members in non-unionized workplaces, organizing strikes, and pressuring politicians to support the union’s various campaigns, like involving custodians in talks when the city asked residents and downtown […]

Mission Local is publishing campaign dispatches for each of the major contenders in the mayor’s race, alternating among candidates weekly until November. This week: Ahsha Safaí. A 2-mile stretch of the highway connecting San Francisco’s westside to Daly City and regions further down the Peninsula may be quite different after Election Day, if a ballot measure mandating its closure passes. The issue has become hotly contested: Dueling rallies took place over the […]
