Aaron Peskin didn’t win the election. But his propositions sure did.

San Francisco Board of Supervisors president, mayoral candidate, and wildly prolific legislator Aaron Peskin lost the election to Daniel Lurie, a wealthy candidate with zero legislative experience. But his three main ballot initiatives are winning and will, barring unforeseen lunacy, pass into legislation. Here’s the story of how they made it. Prop. CCreating a position for an inspector general with the power to investigate government and city contractor fraud, waste, abuse or misconduct would seem like a tough measure to oppose. It didn’t require any new funding, every single member of the Board of Supervisors voted to put it on the ballot, and corruption scandals have been breaking at a steady clip for years. But GrowSF, TogetherSF Action and the San Francisco Democratic Party all came out against it. It got 60 percent of the preliminary vote anyway. Partly that’s because Peskin […]

See how they run: Dolores Huerta also endorses Aaron Peskin

Dolores Huerta, the legendary labor organizer who co-founded the United Farm Workers with Cesar Chavez, has endorsed Board of Supervisors’ president Aaron Peskin in San Francisco’s mayoral race. Si se puede!”“I grew up in a household where, as a young kid, we didn’t eat table grapes because of […]

Peskin leading in direct fundraising, Prop. M gets another boost

In the two weeks since Mission Local last published a campaign finance dispatch, a total of $2.7 million was put toward the San Francisco general election on Nov. 5, bringing the latest total to an eye-watering $45.6 million. Since then, the Ethics Commission has also published more detailed data on campaign committees’ finances: On Thursday, every campaign was required to file their totals for money raised and spent  from July 1 to Sept.  21. This included individual candidate committees, like those controlled directly by mayoral candidates and others, and third-party political action committees. The mayor’s race is, by far, the priciest contest: A total of $23 million has been fundraised among the candidates running, the bulk of it from the Levi Strauss heir and nonprofit founder Daniel Lurie. Then, the 15 propositions have fundraised $12.8 million, though most of that, $8.7 million, […]
