In lieu of an elaborate memorial, Ruiz simply hugged a large framed photo of his brother Martin, who had died two days after his 19th birthday.Ruiz was stoic, taking in the scene. When asked about his brother, however, he smiled. “He thought he was the best dancer,” Marco grinned. In reality, “he was so bad — but he didn’t care.” After Martin was killed in a car accident years ago, 1,000 people attended the funeral, Marco added. Man with life-threatening gunshot wounds around 24th and Mission

A man was transported to a local hospital Friday night with life-threatening injuries following a reported shooting near 24th and Mission streets.Police officers responded to the shooting at approximately 8:10 p.m. and found the man suffering from gunshot wounds, according to the San Francisco Police Department. Officers provided first aid to the man while they waited for paramedics to arrive. Police have not disclosed the identity of the man. This remains an open investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the SFPD at 415-575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411 and begin the message with SFPD. Fire at Mission Buddhist temple displaced four, including cats

The fire at a Mission Buddhist temple residence near 22nd and Capp streets on Tuesday left four residents displaced, of 15 residents living in the adjacent building, according to the San Francisco Fire Department.  The fire hit the residential Victorian adjoining the temple. No residents were injured, and one firefighter suffered minor injuries. Both cats living in the building were rescued, according to the nuns. The cats were not eating since the fire, one nun said. The firefighters rescued one cat, and the other hid under a bed on the third floor. The Victorian-style residential building, adjacent to the Buddhist temple Hua Zang Si, which opened in 2004, suffered “extensive damage,” according to the fire department. SFPD arrests suspect in July Mission homicide

A suspect in the July 24 homicide at the 16th Street BART Plaza was arrested on Sunday, the San Francisco Police Department reported today.Luis Rebolledo, a 37-year-old male who is suspected of killing a 20-year-old Black man at the 16th Street BART Plaza in broad-daylight at around 5:30 p.m. on July 24, was arrested at Shaddick Drive in Antioch, the department said.After the July 24 shooting, the victim was taken away by an ambulance with life-threatening injuries and died from gunshot wounds in the hospital. The shooting followed a fight with a crowd of about 20 young people at the BART Plaza, Mission Local reported in July.Rebolledo was transported to San Francisco County Jail and booked at 2:59 a.m. for homicide, carrying a concealed firearm, second degree robbery, and other charges. Gas leak shuts down 4 blocks in Mission, buildings evacuated

A gas leak near 24th and Hampshire streets in the Mission caused several buildings to be evacuated on Tuesday morning for about three hours, as emergency crews worked to find the source of the leak and shut it down. A four-block radius on Hampshire Street from 23rd to 25th streets and on 24th Street from Potrero Avenue to York Street was still shut down to vehicle traffic as of Tuesday afternoon, and emergency crews were on scene.Lt. Mariano Elias, a spokesperson for the San Francisco Fire Department, said the department got a 911 call from a construction worker at 9:15 a.m. about a broken gas pipe at the intersection. Mission Local obtains list of 13 S.F. schools that may merge/close

Ahead of today’s scheduled 5 p.m. announcement, Mission Local has obtained the list of the San Francisco public schools that meet the district’s criteria for merger or closure. Three schools will potentially close, eight will potentially merge with another school and two schools may become “welcoming schools” for a closed school. The list follows: El Dorado is proposed to merge with Visitacion Valley with students moving to the Visitacion Valley campus; Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy is proposed to merge with Sanchez Elementary with the campus being repurposed as an early education center; Jean Parker Elementary is proposed to close with students attending Gordon J. Thousands march in Mission on eve of Israel-Gaza anniversary

Thousands of pro-Palestine protesters gathered at 16th and Valencia streets on Sunday to march through the neighborhood commemorating one-year since the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks and Israel’s bombardment and invasion of Gaza that followed. The protest, titled “One year of genocide, one year of resistance,” began at 1 p.m. and snaked through the Mission with demonstrators chanting “Free, free Palestine!” and “Long live the intifada” before ending up at Dolores Park.  Pro-Palestinian protesters marching through the Mission on Oct. 6, 2024. Mission Street celebrates National Taco Day with a taco tour

Many took a stroll through the Mission on Friday on a taco tour to celebrate National Taco Day. Pollo, carne asada, al pastor, shrimp and other less well-known options such as crispy potato and cochinita pibil were part of a menu that featured 10 local restaurants, each offering their own signature creation.Participants had the option of buying a $17 ticket that included five tacos from any of the participating establishments.
