Daniel Lurie proposes rejiggering San Francisco mayor’s office

San Francisco Mayor-elect Daniel Lurie is proposing to overhaul the mayor’s office and bring in several “policy chiefs” to serve as his deputies, a bid to “enhance effectiveness and accountability” over the city’s sprawling 56-agency bureaucracy. The move partly harkens back to a system that San Francisco had until the early 1990s in which “deputy mayors” supervised city departments. San Francisco voters did away with the system by passing Proposition H in 1991, a move largely fueled by anger about the high pay of deputy mayors at the time. Since then, the mayor has leaned heavily on a single position to corral the city’s department heads: the chief of staff.Currently, all department heads report to the mayor through the chief of staff. The proposed changes would add four more chiefs overseeing public safety, housing and economic development, public health, and “infrastructure, climate, […]

Trump win a ‘punch in the mouth’ for presumptive mayor-elect Lurie

When the next round of ballots are processed at 4 p.m. today, it is widely expected that Daniel Lurie’s path to mayor will move from probable to something more closely resembling a mathematical certainty. Expect his challengers to gracefully acknowledge this. Lurie’s plan to win the race appears to have worked out as devised: Copious amounts of ready money — more than $16 million — drowning out less blessed candidates and highly competent behind-the-scenes hired lieutenants directing a deeply disciplined candidate — who never once succumbed to the temptation to go off-message. The old Yiddish proverb is that a wise man knows what he says and a fool says what he knows. Lurie has proven wise by this measure. So that was the plan to get elected. But, come January, he’ll need a new plan: A plan to govern. At this point, perhaps the […]

Daniel Lurie leads after strange and terrible election night: Analysis

It’s a shame that San Francisco’s fascinating election results can’t be viewed in isolation from the strange and terrible returns that propelled Donald Trump once more to the presidency. But the luxury of ignoring the bigger picture is something San Francisco no longer gets to do. As of a shade before 1 a.m., every last in-person vote was tabulated — 37,345 of them (20,000 provisional votes are pending). In-person voting is a bit like shaving with a straight-edge razor or knitting your own pot-holders: You could do it if you wanted to, but hardly anybody does. At present, 234,453 votes have been counted; a shade under 45 percent. The Department of Elections expects around 157,000 more votes to trickle in (including those 20,000 provisional ballots). That would result in perhaps a 75 percent turnout; San Francisco voters show up at an average […]

Daniel Lurie, the Democrat, gets supports from Republican group

Mission Local is publishing campaign dispatches for each of the major contenders in the mayor’s race, alternating among candidates weekly until November. This week: Daniel Lurie. Read earlier dispatches here. With ballots being mailed out to San Francisco voters on Oct. 7, the 7.6 percent of them who registered as Republicans might be surprised to see whom their fellow Republicans are telling them to vote for. A rising Republican political group called San Francisco Briones Society has put moderate-leaning Democratic candidate Daniel Lurie as their first choice for the November election, ranking Mark Farrell as second and the incumbent Mayor London Breed as third. All three are registered Democrats.  This came at the expense of Farrell, whose conservative campaign rhetoric has won over law-and-order voters and is backed by donors such as Thomas Coates — a rent-control foe who gave $500,000 to a […]
