Mark Farrell, Mayor Breed hit with cease-and-desist letters over use of S.F. City seal

Mission Local obtained a cease-and-desist letter by the clerk of the Board of Supervisors penned to mayoral candidate Mark Farrell. At issue: His purported misuse of the seal of the city of San Francisco.  The Information first reported that Mayor London Breed also received a cease-and-desist letter for purported misuse of the seal, which was also addressed to the city’s chief of protocol, Maryam Muduroglu.A third cease-and-desist letter was sent to the proprietor of a polymarket website offering the chance to bet on who will win the mayor’s race. In a Thursday evening email to members of the Board of Supervisors, longtime board clerk Angela Calvillo referred to this as “the most egregious” case. She said she expects to follow up with the site on Friday morning.  The cease-and-desist letters were penned by Calvillo in conjunction with the City Attorney’s […]

Safaí, city planner, talks transit, trees, rent control with architects

On Tuesday evening, Ahsha Safaí, the District 11 supervisor and mayoral candidate, was at a small event with architects at the William Duff Architects firm — an audience, more or less of his peers, for the MIT-trained city planner. After a longer-than-expected Board of Supervisors meeting, Safaí arrived at the firm’s kitchen around 6 p.m., about half an hour behind schedule. There was sparkling water, cashews in paper cones and a bottle of Excelsior wine — a fitting vintage for the Excelsior supervisor.Since the start of the year, the architectural firm has invited all leading mayoral candidates for a meet-and-greet, and this was the last. The firm, on Folsom and 9th streets, is located in a space transformed from a previous carpet store, with high wooden ceilings and a living tree growing in its center.  It was evident from the beginning that […]

SF mayor, city attorney broke law by deleting texts, task force says

The Sunshine Ordinance Task Force, San Francisco’s oversight body responsible for public records and transparency laws, unanimously ruled on Wednesday night that Mayor London Breed and City Attorney David Chiu both violated city law by deleting text messages dealing with official business. The eight members of the task force in attendance — two were absent, one seat is vacant — also unanimously referred the mayor’s actions to the San Francisco Ethics Commission for investigation and possible discipline.“This seems like such an egregious practice,” said Dean Schmidt, an attorney and task force member. “This is a person who’s probably constantly sending messages around the city, and yet … none of them are making it to the public record. I mean that is a quantum violation, in my estimation, of public records laws.”“It means everything’s been deleted,” Schmidt continued, indicating not just a […]

Shotwell St. neighbors sue city over vagrancy, sex workers

Five neighbors of Showell Street in the Mission District filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against San Francisco over what they called the city’s inability to address sex work on their street, as well as frequent public urination and drinking at Jose Coronado Playground. The filing of a lawsuit has quickly resulted in action: Mayor London Breed and Supervisor Hillary Ronen this morning announced via a press release that the city will install barricades and cameras along Shotwell, similar to the barriers on Capp Street nearby, to deter sex work and cruising. The city will also start issuing “Dear John” warning letters that would be mailed to the owners of cars “seen in a known area for prostitution activity” in order to “discourage such behavior by notifying drivers” — and, perhaps, their families. “Additionally, it is possible that others residing at the vehicle owner’s […]

District 1 candidates on Richmond seniors’ access to rest of the city

Welcome back to our weekly “Meet the Candidates” series, in which District 1 supervisorial candidates who have filed to run respond to a question in 100 words or fewer. Answers are published each week, but we are also archiving each answer on this page for District 1, to make it easier for voters to browse. Next week, I will be on the mayoral campaign trail. Reach me at junyao@missionlocal.com. For seniors living in the Richmond, one of San Francisco’s outermost neighborhoods, a dominant concern is transit, especially medical transportation for seniors. Services like paratransit and taxi vouchers can be insufficient when someone has to go to dialysis three times a week, said Christine Ness, programs director at Richmond Senior Center. We asked the candidates this week: What will you do to make sure seniors have more access to get around the city? Jeremiah […]

Black woman slammed into wall after SFPD jaywalking stop files legal claim against city

Christiana Porter, the 34-year-old Black woman who was shoved against a wall by a San Francisco police officer last month, has filed a claim against the city for injuries that left her with a concussion and a separated shoulder, her attorney Treva Stewart said in a press conference on Thursday. The city has 45 days to respond to the claim, which was filed Aug. 12 and alleges excessive force by SFPD officers, according to a press release from the San Francisco NAACP Youth Council. If the city rejects or fails to respond to the claim, Porter can then file a lawsuit. Porter has said she intends to pursue a civil case.Porter was walking down Geary Boulevard on July 29 when SFPD officer Josh McFall stopped her near Second Avenue after she purportedly crossed on a red light. Bissap Baobab can stay open till 4 a.m. on weekends, city says

Weekend nights on Mission Street just got a little longer. The San Francisco Entertainment Commission voted unanimously today to approve Bissap Baobab’s request to stay open until 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. The commission’s discussion of the matter took all of five minutes. Shortly before 6 p.m. on Tuesday, after commissioners noted that there was no documented opposition to the late night permit, the five of them voted to give the go-ahead.Marco Senghor, the eatery’s owner, said he feels excited to be able to offer his signature Senegalese hospitality just a little later on weekend nights. At the hearing, a representative of the restaurant said weekend parties would offer flamenco, Afrobeats, salsa, and more. The late night hours won’t necessarily mean late night drinking, however: By state law, alcohol must stop being served at 2 a.m. Senghor, for his part, […]
