Board rejects Mayor Breed’s final picks for S.F. commissions

The Board of Supervisors in a 5-4 vote today rejected Mayor London Breed’s nominations to two city commissions. The vote seemed to say: Leave it to the next mayor. “I think it is the obligation of this board to put our foot down and reject these, and let a new mayor nominate whoever he chooses,” said Board president Aaron Peskin. “I would rather give the new mayor a clean slate.” Breed had nominated former California Public Utilities Commission administrative law judge Joanna Gubman to the Board of Appeals, transit planner and Apple transportation product manager Sara Barz to the Municipal Transportation Agency Board of Directors, and attorney James Byrne to fill the Police Commission seat vacated by Debra Walker — who Breed recently appointed to the Arts Commission.The Board of Supervisors Rules Committee rejected all three nominations last week. SFMTA board approves new Valencia bikeway—but few are happy

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s board unanimously approved the new curbside Valencia Street bike lane on Tuesday, and admitted that the transit agency should have been more cautious with experiments in merchant corridors.That experiment — a bike lane running up the center of the street — had pitted transit advocates against shopkeepers. Now cyclists and the Valencia Corridor Merchants Association were finally on the same page: Neither were fans of the new design.“The [merchants association] cannot officially support the side-running bike lane,” said Manny Yekutiel, president of the Valencia Corridor Merchants Association, which has fought the old design. Matt Alexander has 287-vote lead in school board race

Matt Alexander, the incumbent president of the Board of Education, appears poised to keep his job after eking out a victory over challenger John Jersin for the fourth and final open seat. The San Francisco Department of Elections moments ago released the results of another 1,961 ballots, bringing the grand total of ballots to 411,708 — 78.83 percent of the electorate. Very few ballots are left to be counted — only around 250 of them, including 200 vote-by-mail ballots and 50 provisional ones cast at polling places throughout the city and the City Hall voting center. Even if the 250 remaining ballots all go Jersin’s way— a mathematical anomaly — it would not be enough for Jersin to flip the results. Races tighten in District 11, Board of Education

The San Francisco Department of Elections moments ago released the results of another 6,923 ballots, crossing the 400,000-vote plateau. The total of processed ballots is now 403,466: 77.25 percent of the electorate.Perhaps 9,600 ballots remain. Of these, only 1,100 are vote-by-mail ballots, and 8,500 are provisional ballots cast throughout the city and at City Hall on Election Day. Scrutinizing provisional ballots requires additional time, and not all may be accepted. If every provisional ballot is accepted — which is not probable — turnout would peak at 79 percent (late-arriving mail ballots have pushed up the potential vote ceiling). School Board candidates struggle to stand out on crowded stage

With the San Francisco Unified School District readying to sail off the edge of the map, 10 of the 11 declared Board of Education candidates shared their plans on proposed school closures and the district’s mammoth budget deficit with over 100 community members at a Friday night forum. The 11 candidate, Lefteris Eleftheriou, didn’t attend the forum held at Gordon J.
