District 7 candidates respond to pending school closures

Article arrow_drop_down

Welcome to “Meet the Candidates,” where Mission Local asks supervisor hopefuls questions in the lead-up to the November election. In District 7 — which includes the Inner Sunset, Parkmerced and West Portal — Matt Boschetto and Stephen Martin-Pinto are running against incumbent Myrna Melgar.

It has been a rocky time for the San Francisco Unified School District, which is currently dealing with a number of woes including pending closures, a worsening financial outlook and staffing issues. Under the “Resource Alignment Initiative,” the district is looking to close and merge selected schools — although which schools have or will be selected is still unknown.

Last week, the district delayed the announcement of which schools are slated for closure, causing further disruption and anger among parents and students who have been left in the dark. On Sunday, Mayor London Breed announced that the city will intervene by sending a team of experts to support the school district and deploying $8.4 million in financial support.

This week, we asked the candidates: What are your thoughts on the SFUSD ‘Resource Alignment Initiative’?

Take a look at their responses below.

Myrna Melgar

  • Job: District 7 supervisor
  • Age: 56
  • Housing: Homeowner
  • Transport: Bike
  • Languages: Spanish, French, Swedish
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree, Excelsior College; master’s degree in urban planning, Columbia University
  • Residency:  Living in Ingleside Terraces since 2011, and lived in District 7 while in college at SF State between 1987 and 1991

As a public school parent, I am distressed about the poor financial situation of our SFUSD, and want to see decisive action and good decisions. Public information has been delayed, but what I want to see is a plan that leaves our kids set up for success, and tackles the long term structural issues. I want SFUSD to do more of what has proven to produce better outcomes and drive enrollment: language immersion programs and K-8 — so any school closures that result in more of that, and produce equitable outcomes, is what we should be aiming for.

Stephen Martin-Pinto

  • Job: Firefighter/major, U.S. Marine Corps reserves
  • Age: 46
  • Housing: Tenant in SF, property owner and landlord in Lemon Grove, California
  • Transport: Fairly evenly split between car, Muni and walking
  • Languages: Spanish, Russian, Georgian
  • Education: University of California, Davis
  • Residency: Living in District 7’s Sunnyside since 2014, and earlier from 1983 to 1998

The fundamental question to ask is how did we even get to this point? Lack of funding due to declining enrollment. Our schools have been mismanaged for decades, and we have spent millions of dollars on unaccountable programs with no results. Furthermore, with incidents of violence at schools such as Everett MS, and lack of ability of school staff to discipline problematic kids, many parents are pulling their kids out of SFUSD. I don’t want closing schools to be the answer, but it might have to be until we start practicing fiscal responsibility and accountability to the kids and the parents.

Ex-SF cop may testify killer acted in self-defense

A longtime San Francisco police inspector and use-of-force trainer who believes it “likely” that Nima Momeni stabbed CashApp founder Bob Lee in self-defense may be called to testify before a jury in coming weeks. Today, during a pretrial hearing before San Francisco Superior Court Judge Alexandra Gordon, retired officer Steve Pomatto said it was “the most likely scenario” that Momeni struggled to pin Lee’s hand, which carried a knife, and that resulted in Lee being stabbed three times in April 2023. “Everything else just doesn’t seem as reasonable as the conclusion that I came up with,” Pomatto said, “or that, in my opinion, the physical and digital evidence supports.”Though prosecutor Assistant District Attorney Omid Talai tried today to have Pomatto, a defense witness, excluded from the trial altogether, Gordon reserved her decision for after Momeni’s own testimony, which is expected in coming […]

Doctor to testify Nima Momeni turned Lee’s knife on him

A doctor and former medical examiner, who is being brought into court as an expert witness by the defense, is expected to testify that CashApp founder Bob Lee may have been holding the knife he was killed with last year. The defense contends that in self-defense, Nima Momeni, the man on trial for Lee’s murder, turned it around on him. John Marraccini, a witness expected to testify in Momeni’s defense in coming weeks, suggested today during a hearing in San Francisco Superior Court that the evidence in the case was consistent with someone defensively turning the knife on Lee on April 4, 2023. The prosecution is likely to argue that Momeni attacked Lee from the front. That night, Lee and Momeni left a party together at the Millennium Tower home of Momeni’s sister, Khazar, and stood together in the Rincon Hill neighborhood, […]

Pope Francis begins visits to Luxembourg and Belgium on a trip to a dwindling flock

Pope Francis is traveling to once-strong bastions of Christianity in the heart of Europe to try to reinvigorate a Catholic flock that is dwindling in the face of secular trends and abuse scandals that have largely emptied the continent’s magnificent cathedrals and village churches. Francis is likely to dwell on Europe’s role past, present and future — particularly as war rages on European soil — during his visits to Luxembourg and Belgium, where he arrives later Thursday and stays through the weekend. Cops talk gangs, sideshows at Mission Station community meeting

Sign up below to get Mission Local’s free newsletter, a daily digest of news you won’t find elsewhere. Sideshows were front-of-mind for community members who attended last night’s monthly meeting at the Mission Police Station. When newly appointed station captain Liza Johansen asked the attendees for questions and concerns, sideshows came up as a point of concern for many. Sideshows are unsanctioned car-related stunt shows, often involving huge crowds, loud noises and reckless driving. Many cause heavy traffic bottlenecks around the area and sometimes injuries. The Mission is no stranger to sideshows, however, over the past two years the numbers of stunt shows reported have been on the rise.  According to SFPD open data, 29 stunt shows or instances involving a stunt vehicle have been reported so far this year. Ten of these have taken place somewhere in the Mission. According to the […]

District 5 candidates on Prop. 36 increasing punishment for crimes

Here’s the latest in our “Meet the Candidates” series for District 5, in which we ask each candidate to answer one question per week leading up to the election. Four candidates are challenging incumbent Supervisor Dean Preston to represent District 5, which spans from the east end of Golden Gate Park through Haight-Ashbury, Japantown and the Western Addition, the Lower Haight and Hayes Valley, and most of the Tenderloin.Proposition 47, passed in 2014, made it so some non-violent theft and drug crimes could only be charged as misdemeanors in California. The law has been blamed for homelessness and brazen shoplifting — stealing items worth $950 or less became a misdemeanor under Prop. 47, as did low-level drug possession. This year, legislators are trying to roll that back. Proposition 36, a state ballot measure in the coming election, attempts to crack down on […]
