Honduran president faces call to resign as video scandal intensifies

TEGUCIGALPA (Reuters) - A leading anti-corruption activist called on Honduran President Xiomara Castro on Wednesday to resign after a video surfaced that appeared to show her brother-in-law negotiating campaign donations with drug traffickers over a decade ago.The video emerged a week after the leftist Castro ordered an end to an extradition treaty with the United States, which was used to take her conservative predecessor to face trial in New York where he was convicted on charges stemming from large-scale cocaine trafficking. In a letter to Castro posted on social media, Gabriela Castellanos, the head of the National Anti-Corruption Council, argued the president should resign due to "serious drug trafficking accusations brought against (your) family circle."If Castro stays on, it would undermine the rule of law and security in the Central American nation, she added. Cow vigilante groups are accused of enforcing, often violently, Indian laws banning cattle slaughter and beef consumption.Scores of cow “protectors” in recent years have been accused of using violence to carry out extra-judicial activities, often finding themselves at odds with law enforcement. Yet their activities have also received a degree of public support […]

Putin’s visit to Mongolia defies ICC warrant and tests neutral nation’s ‘third neighbor’ diplomacy

Vladimir Putin arrived in Mongolia on Sept. 2, the first time the Russian president has visited an International Criminal Court (ICC) member country since the body issued a warrant for his arrest in 2023. While officially commemorating a Soviet-Mongolian military victory in World War II, Putin’s visit will test the small central Asian country’s policy of neutrality and the reach of international institutions.Mongolia, a country of just 3.3 million people but with huge geographical territory, has long navigated its foreign policy in the shadow of Russia and China, with whom it has extensive historical and economic ties. The country has attempted to bolster its independence from its more powerful neighbors by developing cordial relations with so-called third neighbor countries that include the United States, Germany, Japan and South Korea.Through this approach, Mongolia has attempted to carve out a niche on the […]
