Maria Su, head of SF Children’s Dept., picked to lead school district

The San Francisco Board of Education moments ago announced that Maria Su has agreed to take the role of superintendent for up to two years after outgoing superintendent Matt Wayne’s resignation was accepted today by a 6-1 vote. The sole dissenting vote, commissioner Kevine Boggess, felt Wayne deserved to be fired rather than resigning. Mission Local is told that Wayne will receive a year’s salary, some $325,000, and health care.Su has worked in San Francisco government for more than 18 years, with the last 15 of those coming as the head of the city’s Department of Children, Youth and their Families. She had also been serving on the school stabilization team formed by Mayor London Breed on Sept. 22. Her appointment — and the promotion of Dr. Karling Aguilera-Fort, presently the senior associate superintendent of education services, as her deputy — will be formally […]

See how they run: Dolores Huerta also endorses Aaron Peskin

Dolores Huerta, the legendary labor organizer who co-founded the United Farm Workers with Cesar Chavez, has endorsed Board of Supervisors’ president Aaron Peskin in San Francisco’s mayoral race. In late September, Huerta endorsed Mayor London Breed for re-election, making this a co-endorsement.When Huerta endorsed Breed, she specifically cited her leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic. Huerta’s support of Peskin is more focused on labor rights and housing affordability. “Aaron Peskin is a fighter for workers and families — he has proven that over and over,” wrote Huerta, in a statement. “I encourage everyone to vote for Aaron Peskin for mayor if you want an effective, healthy, and affordable city that supports its families, renters, and workers fighting for a better future! Si se puede!”“I grew up in a household where, as a young kid, we didn’t eat table grapes because of […]

Nima Momeni’s sister testifies her brother didn’t kill Bob Lee

A year and a half after Nima Momeni allegedly killed Cash App founder Bob Lee, Momeni’s sister, Khazar, broke her silence today and testified in court that he did no such thing. Khazar Momeni has been at the center of the ongoing murder case: Prosecutors claim Momeni stabbed Lee, angry over some inappropriate action between Lee and his sister on April 3, 2024, in the hours before Lee’s stabbing. Momeni’s defense team, meanwhile, says his sister was actually assaulted by her drug dealer, Jeremy Boivin. They allege that Lee pulled a knife on Momeni, and Momeni was forced to turn it around on Lee. Subpoenaed to court by prosecutors today, Khazar, testified that she had been sexually assaulted by Boivin that night — and insisted that her brother did not kill Lee. Borzoyeh Mohazzabi, Lee’s friend who was with him earlier in the […]

New policy approved on S.F. below-market-rate condos resale

It had been two years of stressful waiting. Amy and Simon Jansuk, have been waiting for a buyer to purchase their below-market-rate condo at 270 Valencia St. since 2022. City rules have limited the sale price of below-market-rate units, meaning owners might even lose money on such sales — Mission Local wrote about the Jansuks’ plight in 2022, detailing how the city had set their sale price at $74,000 less than they’d spent on the condo. But after legislation proposed by District 7 Supervisor Myrna Melgar, they will finally have a chance to make a profit. The Planning Commission today voted 5-1 to approve an ordinance to create a waiver specifically for some below-market-rate units — like the Jansuks’ condo — that were bought for a higher price than the city is now allowing them to sell for. The waiver will only apply to […]

SFUSD superintendent gets earful from Harvey Milk parents, kids

Embattled San Francisco Unified School District Superintendent Matt Wayne arrived at Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy in the Castro on Wednesday for an “information session,” and to answer questions about the school’s proposed closure and merger with Sanchez Elementary. And Wayne, who has been strongly criticized in recent days by the mayor, the school board, and every major mayoral candidate, did not receive a respite. He was confronted outside the school by a loud crowd of teachers, staff, parents, students, alumni, and supporters pressuring him to keep the school, one of 11 on the chopping block, open. ”We Love Our School” and “Save Harvey Milk” were written on handmade signs carried by students and staff rallying shortly after the end of the school day — the second such rally at Harvey Milk in just a week. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, the […]

Dregs One is documenting — and making — hip-hop history

When Oakland rap star Kamaiyah sat down to be interviewed by San Francisco rapper and graffiti artist Dregs One on his “History of the Bay” podcast last month, she appeared instantly at ease. She’s generally camera-shy and private, but here, she was engaged and open — much more inclined to share details about her life.Dregs One noted the contrast. He had watched a few interviews to prepare for their conversation, he said, and she appeared “standoffish” in some of them. Why the difference?“It’s the energy,” Kamaiyah explained. She was responding positively to his naturally inquisitive approach and deep, intimate knowledge of Bay Area hip-hop culture — the result of living it his whole life.Dregs One interviews Kamaiyah for his podcast, ‘History of the Bay.’ Credit: Courtesy of Dregs One This Saturday, Oct. 19, that energy and knowledge will yet again […]

Gas leak shuts down 4 blocks in Mission, buildings evacuated
