Female hot dog vendor tackled, handcuffed by SF police

Video obtained by Mission Local shows San Francisco police tackle and handcuff a woman on the Embarcadero this morning as her young daughter cried hysterically — during a confiscation of her hot dog stand. The woman could be heard saying “Ya, me voy, me voy!” or, “I’m leaving, I’m leaving!”Onlookers filmed as the woman struggled on the pavement with two officers who were pulling her arms behind her back to handcuff her. A worker in a yellow vest blocked onlookers from approaching or filming up close.  “It’s ‘cause she fought with the officers,” another worker in an unmarked yellow vest told an onlooker as he rolled the hotdog stand away. “These are being confiscated by the Department of Public Health.” A witness told Mission Local that the woman was upset about her cart being confiscated and officers were holding her back as […]

Folio Books staff to bring Noe Valley Books to same space in October

Four former staff members at the defunct Folio Books are working to open a new bookstore — named Noe Valley Books — at the same location as the shuttered neighborhood staple as soon as October. There has been a bookstore at at 3957 24th St. between Sanchez and Noe for nearly four decades — “the bookstore across from Whole Foods,” as locals say. Phoenix Books was at the site for 28 years until 2013. Then came Folio Books, which stayed in business for a decade, but then closed its doors in February this year. Isaiah Scandrette, co-owner of the nascent Noe Valley Books, started working at Folio Books in May 2021. He said he didn’t realize how much people loved the bookstore until the announcement of its closure.  “People were coming in tears, asking ‘Did we not do enough?’” Scandrette recalled. “That really […]

Chief Scott put on spot at press conference on anti-Black incidents

Christiana Porter, the alleged jaywalker slammed to a wall by San Francisco police officer Josh McFall in late July, said she continues to live in fear due to the incident. “There is no way I should have been brutalized the way I was for merely walking across the street — in the crosswalk,” said Porter, a 34 year-old Black mother of five at a Thursday morning press conference held at the Third Baptist Church.Porter today said she feared that her four daughters might be targeted while walking to school or that her non-verbal son might be unable to communicate if faced with a similar situation. “It shouldn’t have to take someone being shot, someone dying, for an outcry.”The press conference drew government officials and community members to denounce a series of anti-Black incidents in San Francisco. Other community members shared stories […]

SF poised to beat DOJ to the punch, ban rent-fixing software

The city of San Francisco has lost over 60,000 residents since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic according to the census (3,660 in 2020; 55,136 in 2021; 4,605 in 2022). There’s been a bit of a resurgence since then; 2023 shows a net gain of a whole 276 people. But still, that’s a lot of missing persons in a city of a little over 800,000. Why is it that rent payments, while still lower than the recent peak in 2019, are still so high? Is there someone we can blame? On Tuesday afternoon, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors moved one step closer to answering that question, by passing an ordinance authored by Supervisor Aaron Peskin banning the sale or use of any algorithmic device that sets, or even  recommends, rents or vacancy levels for residential properties in San Francisco.  If it’s […]
