September Is an Important Month for Social Security. Here’s Why.

Millions of older Americans receive a monthly Social Security benefit. And for many, that income is essential to covering their ongoing costs. The good news is that each year, Social Security benefits are eligible for a cost-of-living adjustment that's tied to inflation. And if you're someone who relies on your monthly benefits heavily, you may be eager to know what cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) you'll be eligible for in 2025.Image source: Getty Images.Unfortunately, we don't have that information just yet. But this month, we'll get a lot closer to narrowing down a 2025 COLA.September's data is the last missing piece of the puzzleAnnual Social Security COLAs are calculated based on inflation data from July, August, and September -- specifically, the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). If there's a rise in the CPI-W during the third quarter […]

Sunset Night Market was simply too packed to campaign

Mission Local is publishing campaign dispatches for each of the major contenders in the mayor’s race, alternating among candidates weekly until November. This week: Ahsha Safaí. Read earlier dispatches here. In San Francisco, night markets tend to start when it’s not night yet. Friday’s Sunset Night Market was no exception. Spanning across seven blocks on Irving Street, from 19th to 26th Avenue, the night market returned for the second year after its previous success and has doubled in size. Around 6 p.m., streets were already packed with people eager to line up for various food trucks and sit with friends around tables covered in green, plaid tablecloths.  At the 21st Avenue stage, belly dancers mingled with the audience: “We want to teach you some movements so we can all dance together!” But the crowd seemed a bit shy, with a few kids dancing […]

Melania’s plea for Trump to control his swearing flops as he tears into Harris at rally

Melania Trump’s apparent plea to her husband Donald Trump to control his language fell on deaf ears on Friday night when he torched Kamala Harris saying that everything she touches turns to “s**t.”The former president and Republican nominee attacked the vice president’s record before a crowd in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, claiming she doesn’t “have any common sense” before noting that both his wife and Reverend Franklin Graham have asked him to not use “foul” language.Trump continued: “They believe in an ideology and – if you look at Kamala and you look at what she’s done to every place she’s touched has turned to s**t. Every single place she’s touched. I have to say, it. Every place she’s touched, you know?”He then said: “You might have heard this, Franklin Graham is wonderful and he wrote me a letter and he said, ‘Sir, […]

Pachyman and Osees bring big dub-punk energy to the Chapel

When Pachy García, a.k.a. Pachyman, opens for the punk-adjacent Osees as part of their annual fall residency at The Chapel on Tuesday, Sept. 3, the musician will be taking part in a nearly 50-year-old tradition started by groundbreaking DJ Don Letts. In 1977, Letts was the DJ at the Roxy in London, also known as the first punk club — like, ever. But, despite the raw new sounds and aesthetics of the bands taking the stage, there were no punk records in the club for him to spin before or after shows: All he had was dub. That’s how Letts learned that the punk patrons — who had come out to see the Clash, the Sex Pistols and the Slits — also loved the unconventional, anti-establishment vibe of reggae. There were those brain-numbing tuff bass lines, lyrics that spoke to strife […]

Bill on street vending enforcement dies, and Mission vending ban

Nearly three months after Sen. Scott Wiener and Mayor London Breed announced the introduction of a California state bill that would have given police authority to ticket and even arrest people selling stolen goods, the legislation quietly died in the State Assembly.SB 925’s path in Sacramento was cut short on Aug. 15 when it was held under submission, a term used when members of a committee want further discussion. Wiener said, however, in plain words this means his bill is dead. The very next day, on Aug. 16, San Francisco took action by extending the Mission Street vending ban for another six months. The moratorium on street vending, which has been in place since Nov. 27, had been already extended early this year for six months and was set to end on Aug. 27.“I was very disappointed. It’s a high priority […]

Average American starts caring about their skin at this age

Americans only start taking their sun-related skincare seriously at age 26, according to new research. The poll of 2,000 U.S. adults found that before their mid-20’s, Americans aren’t taking proper care of their skin — which might be why respondents are four times as likely to get scalded by the sun than they are to use sunscreen. The survey found 79% have experienced sunburn, while only a fifth admit to using facial sunscreen (20%) or body sunscreen (21%) daily. Commissioned by Melanoma Research Alliance, the largest private nonprofit funder of melanoma research, and conducted by Talker Research, the survey also looked at the habits of different generations regarding sun protection.
