In the two weeks since Mission Local last published a campaign finance dispatch, a total of $2.7 million was put toward the San Francisco general election on Nov. 5, bringing the latest total to an eye-watering $45.6 million. Since then, the Ethics Commission has also published more detailed data on campaign committees’ finances: On Thursday, every campaign was required to file their totals for money raised and spent  from July 1 to Sept.  21. This included individual candidate committees, like those controlled directly by mayoral candidates and others, and third-party political action committees. The mayor’s race is, by far, the priciest contest: A total of $23 million has been fundraised among the candidates running, the bulk of it from the Levi Strauss heir and nonprofit founder Daniel Lurie. Then, the 15 propositions have fundraised $12.8 million, though most of that, $8.7 million, […]

Hurricanes, storms, typhoons… Is September wetter than usual?

With typhoon Yagi battering Asia, storm Boris drenching parts of Europe, extreme flooding in the Sahel and hurricane Helene racing towards Florida, September so far has been a very wet month. But while scientists can link some extreme weather events directly to human-caused global warming, it remains too early to draw clear conclusions about this sodden month."You will always have some sort of extreme weather events, but their intensity has been magnified by global warming, especially in the context of rainfall," Paulo Ceppi from Imperial College London's Grantham Institute told AFP on Thursday."That's probably one of the common drivers of these different events in very different parts of the world."Early indications from monthly data show some record-breaking precipitation levels in the regions affected. In central Europe, the torrential rains accompanying storm Boris were "the heaviest ever recorded" in the region, according to […]

Underdog S.F. mayoral candidates take stage

Most of San Francisco’s mayoral race has centered on five candidates: Mayor London Breed, Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin, District 11 Supervisor Ahsha Safaí, former District 2 Supervisor and caretaker mayor Mark Farrell, and Levi Strauss heir and nonprofit founder Daniel Lurie.Barring a truly cataclysmic event, one of those five will win. They have the most name recognition, decades of political experience between them, sophisticated teams of campaigners, and gobs of cash. Together, the candidates or the PACs supporting them have raised $22.9 million — the other eight candidates in the race have just shy of $144,000.But it costs only $7,020 to run for mayor, and that has brought out a cohort of underdogs, striving for votes.Five of them got that chance on Saturday morning in the Mission, during a Latino-focused debate at Gray Area on Mission Street. The […]
