Police detained a group of young men Tuesday at around 5 p.m. for allegedly assaulting and attempting to rob a pedestrian near Angie’s Jewelry Store at 2386 Mission St . near 20th Street. It’s unclear how many men were arrested, but it appeared to be around five men.

The victim was taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries at around 6:30 p.m.

The suspects allegedly assaulted the victim and then ran into the jewelry store, according to several businesses. A worker at the jewelry store said a couple of guys ran into his store. He thought they were customers until police surrounded the area and took the suspects into custody.

At least four police SUVs were parked on Mission Street. Pedestrians watched from the bus stop on the east side of the street as officers arrested several young men.

A community member standing outside of Milagros de Mexico, a store on the corner of where the alleged crime occurred, said he heard that a group of “bandits” attempted to assault a man and steal his neck chain. He and others estimated that five young men were arrested, but this could not be confirmed.

Police spoke with the alleged victim on the sidewalk, who seemed startled, but cooperative. Businesses in the area closed down shortly after the incident occurred.
