Welcome back to the “Meet the Candidates” series for the school board, where we ask each candidate one question every two weeks. They must answer the question in 100 words or fewer. We will link to longer answers.
Eleven candidates are vying for four seats on the city’s seven-person school board. The election will take place on Nov. 5. Non-citizen parents of children living in the city are permitted to vote in school board elections, and can find information on doing so here.
We’ve been following the school board candidates since summer, asking their opinions on the rescheduled antisemitism workshops, the now-scrapped school closure plan and balancing the budget. Amid a crowded slate, the candidates have sometimes presented very similar answers. So this week, we asked the candidates:
What makes you stand out, and why should people vote for you?
Candidates cited occupational and advocacy backgrounds they believed made them unique, ranging from SFUSD experience to corporate leadership to law. One candidate just graduated from an SFUSD high school; another has decades of experience as an educator.
Parag Gupta
- Job: Chief program officer at Mercy Housing
- Age: 46
- Residency: San Francisco
- Educational background: Bachelor’s degree with honors from the University of Chicago; master’s degree in Public Policy from Harvard University
- SFUSD experience: Parent of recent CIS De Avila grad; School Site Council chair; 8th grade algebra focus group; drafting SFUSD policy priorities for SF Democrats as SF DCCC member; developing financial strategy for Stupski Foundation programs to help students, including SFUSD students, complete postsecondary education
- Languages: Basic Spanish, basic French, conversational Hindi
I stand out, and ready to serve, because:
1. I am a proud public school parent and served on the governing board of my daughter’s elementary school.
2. I bring 25 years of impact leadership — balancing financials and impact in large complex systems. This includes helping thousands of low-income students achieve academic success. Currently, I’m a leader at Mercy Housing, an affordable houser.
3. As an elected SF Democratic Party member, I’ve worked collaboratively across differences towards results. My moral compass is to always make decisions my daughter (and all SF children) will appreciate even a decade from now.

I speak the truth, even when it may be controversial or unpopular, and vote my convictions. I had demonstrated this clearly when I served on the BOE two years ago. This time, I will apply my experience and knowledge gained as a principal, teacher, former commissioner, parent and entrepreneur to address the District’s fiscal, operational and academic challenges, all the while putting students, not politics, first.
Jaime Huling

I’m a proven fighter for San Franciscans. As a Deputy City Attorney and LGBTQ movement lawyer, I’ve stood up for workers and students at the Supreme Court and sued the Trump Administration and won. With experience solving local government problems, parents want me on the board to fight for our kids as we face a potential state takeover of our school district. As a Latina and public school mom, I’ve worked for over a decade to expand college access for first-generation students and am committed to making sure all of our kids get the education they deserve.

I have experience leading large organizations and budgets. These skills grew from a deeply held family value – education. My mother grew up in poverty, but public school math helped her work her way out. My public schools taught me to code, to start a business; and eventually I became an executive at LinkedIn.
It was exciting to work as a leader of an organization with thousands of people, and a multi-billion dollar budget. Now, for my kids and others, I’m eager to help our schools address the fiscal crisis and mismanagement. I’m optimistic that I could make a real impact.

I’m 19 and just graduated from high school, which gives me a unique perspective on the challenges SFUSD is facing. Over the past few years I’ve seen firsthand how much Board of Education inaction hurts public schools, and public school students. Kids today don’t believe city officials care about their needs. We can change that by communicating better and working together to find creative solutions to the district’s problems. But I believe it will take a new generation of leaders to make this happen. Should someone my age be on San Francisco’s Board of Education? Isn’t it long overdue?

I’m the only candidate in this race who’s a public school educator. I have over 20 years of experience as a teacher and principal in SFUSD. I’m not interested in using the school board as a springboard for other political office. I’m endorsed by the teachers’ union, the nurses, and the firefighters.

In fact, I have worked for Fortune 100 companies in six continents (speak English, French, Chinese), headed up regions/businesses, and collaborated with all types of groups to achieve results. Having been CEO multiple times gives me the unique ability to turnaround businesses, which is what is needed given the fiscal crisis at SFUSD.

Kremlin aide says Germany car industry plight shows green transition risks

Jury shown video of Nima Momeni’s stabbing motions
In a win for the prosecution, jurors today were shown a video in which alleged killer Nima Momeni made distinct stabbing motions, which prosecutors say match those that killed Cash App founder Bob Lee. The video was shown over objections from Momeni’s defense team. The jury was also shown images of the exact locations of Lee’s stab wounds, during testimony from Assistant Medical Examiner Ellen Moffatt. The video was recorded by San Francisco police Sgt. David Goff, who was tracking Momeni’s movements in the days after the stabbing in April 2023. When he captured Momeni on video, the defendant was talking to Brian Hedley, a private investigator who worked for Momeni’s former defense attorney, Paula Canny. A mural defaced, restored and its evolution
This weekend, a sharp resident noticed on Saturday morning that Marta Ayala Minero’s mural on the northeast corner of 24th and Valencia streets had been vandalized.
