Dolores Huerta, la icónica organizadora laboral que cofundó Trabajadores Unidos del Campo (United Farm Workers) junto a César Chávez, ha respaldado al presidente de la Junta de Supervisores, Aaron Peskin, en la contienda electoral por la alcaldía de San Francisco. A finales de septiembre, Huerta también respaldó a la alcaldesa London Breed para su reelección, lo que convierte esta situación en un respaldo conjunto.
Cuando Huerta respaldó a Breed, citó específicamente su liderazgo durante la pandemia del COVID-19. El apoyo de Huerta a Peskin se centra más en los derechos laborales y la asequibilidad de la vivienda. “Aaron Peskin es un defensor de los trabajadores y las familias; lo ha demostrado una y otra vez”, escribió Huerta en un comunicado. “¡Animo a todos a votar por Aaron Peskin para alcalde si quieren una ciudad efectiva, saludable y asequible que apoye a sus familias, inquilinos y trabajadores que luchan por un futuro mejor! ¡Sí se puede!”
“Crecí en un hogar donde, de niño, no comíamos uvas frescas debido la UFW”, declaró Peskin hoy. “César Chávez, el movimiento de los Trabajadores Unidos del Campo y Dolores Huerta fueron parte de mi educación en la mesa de la cocina durante mi infancia”. Peskin señala que él y Huerta se han cruzado en varias ocasiones a lo largo de los años, aunque solo de manera breve.
Recientemente, el Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de la Salud, que representa a los empleados del Mission Neighborhood Health Center y otras instituciones de salud en la ciudad, se puso en contacto con Huerta y presentó a ambos de manera formal. “Ella y yo intercambiamos llamadas y mensajes de texto, y luego me anunció, anteayer, que estaba honrada de respaldarme”, comentó Peskin. “Me siento honrado y encantado; es uno de los respaldos más significativos que he recibido, estoy muy orgulloso”.
La presentación de Huerta fue el acto más reciente del Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de la Salud para respaldar la campaña de Peskin. El 11 de octubre, donaron $75,000 dólares a un PAC a favor de Peskin y recientemente revocaron su respaldo de segundo lugar al oponente de Peskin, Ahsha Safaí, porque Safaí estableció una alianza con Mark Farrell. Michael Rouppet, el copresidente del Club Demócrata Latinx de San Francisco, criticó el respaldo de Huerta a Breed (aunque no a Huerta) con el argumento de que Breed se ha negado a reunirse con el grupo, el único club demócrata latino en San Francisco, o a escuchar sus preocupaciones sobre la policía, la caótica situación de los vendedores ambulantes en la calle Misión y el desplazamiento. Rouppet expresó que estaba encantado de saber del respaldo de Huerta a Peskin, a quien el club ha apoyado para la alcaldía. “Dolores Huerta es un ícono en nuestra comunidad”, continuó Rouppet. “Este respaldo apoya a los inquilinos, apoya a nuestras poblaciones más vulnerables en San Francisco y respalda nuestros esfuerzos por organizar a nivel comunitario para dar voz a quienes no están en la mesa de discusión”.

SFMTA board approves new Valencia bikeway—but few are happy
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s board unanimously approved the new curbside Valencia Street bike lane on Tuesday, and admitted that the transit agency should have been more cautious with experiments in merchant corridors.That experiment — a bike lane running up the center of the street — had pitted transit advocates against shopkeepers. Nima Momeni contradicts himself on witness stand
In his third day of testimony Nima Momeni, who is on trial for the stabbing death of Cash App founder Bob Lee seemed to contradict some of his earlier statements. For the most part, Momeni answered the questions about the April 2023 incident and aftermath using very similar phrasing as he did during two days of testimony last week. Most significantly, Momeni testified earlier that the altercation between Lee and himself began over a “joke” he made to Lee about spending time with his family instead of going to a strip club. Judge Alexandra Gordon, who asked questions through the morning on behalf of the jurors, asked Momeni what happened after this joke and whether Momeni ever apologized for it.
