TikTok accused of harming younger users in new US lawsuits

Article arrow_drop_down

STORY: New lawsuits filed against TikTok on Tuesday accuse the popular social media platform of harming and failing to protect young people.

The lawsuits were filed separately in New York, California, the District of Columbia, and 11 other states.

They expand Chinese-owned TikTok’s legal fight with U.S. regulators and seek new financial penalties against the company.

The states accuse TikTok of using intentionally addictive software designed to keep children watching as long and often as possible and misrepresenting its content moderation effectiveness.

They also argue that TikTok seeks to maximize the amount of time users spend on the app to target them with ads.

Washington, D.C.’s attorney general alleged TikTok operates an unlicensed money transmission business through its live streaming and virtual currency features.

TikTok said it strongly disagreed with the claims, (quote) “many of which we believe to be inaccurate and misleading.”

TikTok provides safety features including default screentime limits and privacy defaults for minors under 16, the company said.

The U.S. Justice Department sued TikTok in August for allegedly failing to protect children’s privacy on the app.

Other states previously sued TikTok for failing to protect children from harm, including Utah and Texas.

TikTok on Monday rejected the allegations in a court filing.

TikTok’s Chinese parent company ByteDance is battling a U.S. law that could ban the app in the United States.

Neil Ballard brightens 24th and Potrero with another mural

At the corner of 24th Street and Potrero Avenue is a Walgreens distinct from any other of the chain’s drugstores in San Francisco. The difference? A bright multi-colored 15-foot-tall mural that wraps around the exterior of the building. It features bright blue houses with dark shadows, thin trees in soft autumn colors and clear bright colorful skies —  a Neil G. Ballard original. Ballard began his project, titled “Evening Trees,” on Sept. 3. He was inspired by the tall, skinny eucalyptus trees on the median strip of Potrero Avenue and the houses of the Mission District. “I want people to get a sense of joy and happiness from the colors on the wall,” Ballard said, referring to the juxtaposition of bright and dark colors. Why is this Idaho high-mountain lake drying up? Sadly, it’s likely a familiar culprit

My friends and I optimistically but naively brought our fly fishing gear on a backpacking trip into the White Clouds at the end of September. We’ve been looking for more out-of-the-way places that might be a little farther from Boise, with maybe a little harder hike to get away from the madding crowds.Ocalkens Lakes seemed to fit the bill: The trailhead is about 27 miles east of Stanley, and the hike was about 4.5 miles, with a 2,000-foot elevation gain up to Ocalkens Lake #2 at 9,200 feet.Just what we were looking for.Until we got there. We were shocked and disappointed to find Ocalkens Lake #2 was nearly dry. Some water still sat a couple of inches deep, but we were able to walk across the muddy lake bed to the other side.Certainly no fishing there. We were able to find Ocalkens Lake #1 […]

Donald Trump campaigned in Juneau, Wisconsin, on Sunday and rebuked his “stupid” campaign staff for showing the “wrong picture” as he once more attempted to answer liberal mockery over his dwindling crowd sizes. The Republican presidential nominee told his crowd again that he plans to be a dictator for one day if he regains the presidency and warned that the country is “finished” if he doesn’t.He also told his audience of working people that he “hated to pay overtime” as an employer, spread paranoia about exploding eco-friendly cars and continued to push the lie that the Biden administration is not helping victims of Hurricane Helene in the southeastern states.Vice President Kamala Harris, his opponent, followed up her tour of storm-hit Georgia and North Carolina with an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, in which she attacked Trump’s running mate JD […]
